Actually, there are less than 200K Federal employees residing in VA, and a lot of them are probably republicans.

The real problem is that Trump hasn't built any new ground, and he never did. He got less of a percentage of the vote than Romney did and only slightly more than McCain. Nowhere near the consensus that Bush got when he recieved 51% of the vote.

Hillary lost because too many voters wasted their votes on third party candidates. It's really not more complicated than that. But those people will come back to the Democrats in 2018 and 2020.

The GOP lost several seats well outside of NOVA. 2017 is looking a lot like 2005 which lead to a 2006 Dem take over of the House and Senate and just like 2005 you guys are pretending it's not happening.

One small problem with your number of less than 200K federal employees.

It doesn't appear to take into account all the military that is in the Norfolk/Hampton Roads/Little Creek/Oceana area. Every service has a base of some sort in that area, and the Navy has a HUGE footprint in Norfolk.

Like it or not, in addition to allowing someone to win if they don't win a majority, the EC prevents third party candidates from getting any footing.

I think Trump will turn out to be such a disaster in the end that even people who voted for him will turn out against him in 2020. That is if any of us are still alive to vote.

The Republicans had a 66-34 majority in the state House after the 2016 elections. Now they have at best a 51-49 majority. Did all of these government workers suddenly decide to move in after 2016. Also Republicans lost seats in local council races in the Philadelphia suburbs where Trump won. The numbers don't back you up.

So there's a simple enough solution. Scrap the EC, and have a system like France has. A first round where guys like you can vote for Third Party Losers like Johnson or Stein, and then if no one clears 50%, you have a second round where you have to shit or get off the pot.
