The one drop rule was based on a breeders view of animals who prize pure bred animals in markets and shows and have to prove their pedigree for these things. This sort of thinking is still predominate among breeders and a beautiful dog or cow or horse, etc, that has a small drop of blood from another breed of dog is not pure thus no longer truly 100% of that breed.

This view of humanity is degrading to us when people apply these breeding standards to homo sapiens. What most characterizes our success in life is not our genetic heritage, though it does have much influence, but it is character, our values and our learning that most defines the likelihood of success for the individual human.

But paradoxically, there have always been exceptions. Many racists took a perspective that emphazied ethnicity more than race and some clasified certain ethnicities as white though they were not caucasian, like the Japanese were classified as an asian 'white' ethnicity based on how quickly they adopted and mastered Western technology. To not include them would be to admit that a nonwhite race could be as advanced as whites were at the time over other ethnicites that had not yet been able to adapt modern methods as well as the Japanese had. They thus used the word 'white' to mean a well bred human of light complexion and thus included the Japanese and Mestizos.

Mestizos, persons of caucasian and Amerindian ancestry, were generally considered caucasian. There are several very influential families in the US that would be considered mestizo in a Spanish culture, and they are proud of their heritage. If you read a list of the people involved in the Battle of Horse shoe Bend and the ethnicities are very blured. People half Amerindian/half Anglo were able to pass as white too easily for there to be a firm racial barrier and the heritage of some of the welathiest in the South and other parts of the nation prohibited the one drop rule from applying to mestizos.

Which is all beside the main point, however. There is no scientific basis for approaching a study of humanity along lines of breeding. That is simply a tool that has long been used to justify the nobility and wealthiest class for having the privileges and influence that they have had largely through the use of physical violence and/or wealth.
