According to a recently released German study, the supposed "environmentally friendly" compact fluorescent light bulbs (CFL's), are reported to have "cancer causing chemicals" that are sent out when the light is switched on, reports London's Daily Telegraph:

Their report advises that the bulbs should not be left on for extended periods, particularly near someone’s head, as they emit poisonous materials when switched on.

Peter Braun, who carried out the tests at the Berlin's Alab Laboratory, said: “For such carcinogenic substances it is important they are kept as far away as possible from the human environment.”

The bulbs are already widely used in the UK following EU direction to phase out traditional incandescent lighting by the end of this year.

But the German scientists claimed that several carcinogenic chemicals and toxins were released when the environmentally-friendly compact fluorescent lamps (CFLs) were switched on, including phenol, naphthalene and styrene.

The new German study is not the first time CFL's have been cited as potentially harmful to humans and the rest of the environment. The Telegraph article also points out:

The latest report follows claims by Abraham Haim, a professor of biology at Haifa University in Israel, that the bulbs could result in higher breast cancer rates if used late at night.

He said that the bluer light that CFLs emitted closely mimicked daylight, disrupting the body's production of the hormone melatonin more than older-style filament bulbs, which cast a yellower light.

The Migraine Action Association has warned that they could trigger migraines and skin care specialists have claimed that their intense light could exacerbate a range of existing skin problems.

When it was revealed that the mercury inside the enviro-light bulb could produce a toxic environment from mercury fumes if the bulb ever broke, the EPA released a three page guide in January on how to properly clean up and dispose of a broken CFL bulb.

But these bulbs use less energy so . . . who gives a shit if they're harmful to us. Swirly on!

My wife, against my preference, put one of these in a pendant light that hangs about a foot from my head over my office desk, maybe 8-weeks ago. About two weeks ago I began having ocular migraines in the middle of the day, and daily. An ocular migraine is characterized by a bright jagged sunburst shape that begins in the center of the vision field and expands outward until it finally disappears.

So they emit when they are first turned on; and if to avoid that (the are not fully bright when first turned on) you leave it on all the time, which is my strategy, that is problematic too.

My strategy is I've stocked piled incandescents and will continue to do so and use them for as long as possible.

Study: Enviro-light bulbs can cause cancer

Some of my buddies and I have been laughing about these bulbs for a few years now. Glad you posted this. About 3 years ago it was determined that the bulbs’ poisonous innards posed a bigger threat to health and the environment than previously thought, but the envirowackos keep pushing them. Now what kind of reality do these people live in where they can hold two contradictory beliefs in one's mind? How is this even possible?

Conclusion?... Job Security...

Liberals have been Creating Problems they later have the Solution to for Generations...

Wait until they are done Sanctioning these Bastard Companies they used to Support...

And do so with the Full Power of the US Congress...

Shit's getting too Predictable.

:)

peace...

i really dont get where the hell the "toxic chemicals (phenol, napthalene, and styrene) come from? Is it from the plastic casing? If so what are the concentrations? If this is just micro-evaporation from the heat created by the light, then the concentrations could be in the picogram range, which is essentially zero. For something to be a cancer risk is has to be at a sufficent concetration.

I would be more concerned about the mercury issues, but the amount is probably small, and you do have to break not only the light, but the switch itself in the light (if its a mercury switch).

As for the light quality, that could be a legitamate claim.

For the last two issues further research and improvements could reduce the issues or eliminate them.

I do agree that mandating these things is very nanny state-ish, why I'm not suprised the brits are taking the lead.
