Student loans may be the next bubble to burst.

Obama can bail them all out to ensure they vote Democrat for the rest of their lives... He can tell them that they will just tax the rich!~ Of course if you ask Obama to end a fucking war he will pretend he didn't hear you...

This is what you get when dumb people like Obama, who are very smart, just do dumb shit everyday of their life... You get people trying to fix problems from the ass end of it. This is also what you get when someone who has probably never worked an honest day in their life manages to becomes President.

President Obama has never said he would "just tax the rich". He has offered up serious spending cuts across the board

It is the Republicans who insist that everyone in the country sacrifice......except for a chosen few

The only people that took spending seriously was the Tea Party, you know, the guys you try and pin the horrible budget Bonehard, Reid and Obama all voted yes for?

Obama has never offered anything other than "tax the rich," that's why the economy is in the dumps. People hear Obama give out short term deficit building "tax credits “but then says we need to tax the rich to close a near 15-20 Trillion dollars added to the deficit in the next 10 years. I know you can't understand how that would affect business but it does not change the reality that people won't invest when they have no fucking clue what they will owe in taxes (one of their BIGGEST costs that produces ZEEEEROO)...

When was the last time you heard Obama offer any meaningful cuts? When Obama still talks about ending wars does it upset you that he is busy starting new wars?

You live in a bubble

The TeaTards created the latest crisis and nearly crashed the economy through their unwillingness to develop a comprehensive budget plan

My oldest son said one of his classmates used some of her grants to get a boob job. So our tax dollars are going to get someone boobs. This is so wrong. And what is wrong with society these days. I guess she got enough to pay for her schools and books and this is what is left over. It was pale grant so she doesnt have to pay it back

So one kid got a boob job so the whole system must be corrupt?

The bottom line is that school is overpriced and their are no jobs to pay off exorbitant loans

Well, yeah, the Job picture is pretty bleak under the Community Organizer, isn't it? Oh, wait - IT'S BUSH'S FAULT.

This is a great case where government subsidies of the system has created a glut. A lot of cases, sending people to college is kind of a waste, but jobs that don't really need someone college educated to do them require them now.

When I went to college in the 1980's, I got a scholarship for the meager tuition by virtue of being in the National Guard, and worked two minimum wage jobs to pay for fees, books, transportation, etc.

The system has created this requirement that you have to have this to have any kind of career which doesn't involve flipping burgers. It's another example of how a useless set of people- in this case, Academia- have managed to manipulate the system to enrich themselves.

I know a lady who has been doing what I do for 30 years. When she started, College Degrees weren't required in this field. But she was darned good at it. Today, she can't find a job, because 90% of jobs in purchasing require a college degree
.

That the job market requires a degree is the fault of 'Academia' how?

Obama shot the country in the face and got us downgraded =D

BTW, the TP had a balanced budget in 5 years, but you knew that because I told you... You also know it didn’t touch SS/MC/MC but it ended the wars and boy, you couldn't have the wars ended due to you being a Neocon and all =D. Obama never even mentioned Rand Pauls budget, my gawd, could Obama even think about really ending the wars and not just talking about it lol? Doubt it...

This goes way beyond your hated liberal arts programs. Students have graduated with liberal arts degrees for generations and have managed to get jobs and be productive workers
Very few graduates are finding employment regardless of their degrees. Those that do are under employed

Don't blame the students for the collapsed job market

Your right I should not blame the students. I blame our culture for convincing students that a BS or BA is the ticket to economic prosperity.

Sad.....that used to be part of the American Dream

Send your kids to college so they can do better than you. My father sent four kids to college working climbing telephone poles. My mom never had to work

My dad worked underground and wanted me to go to college. I ended up making more money climbing poles than teaching. Now even more money mining kind of like my dad. My wife does not work.

I watched this also...unfortunately you will never see this film on television.
Like Food, Inc. - there is too much truth for the media to handle.
A media that believes that government spending is a benefit to all does not want to show how government spending actually destroys everything it touches. For the simple fact that what to spend tax dollars on are made purely for idealogical and political reasons rather than logical or practical.

Kids are given loans at 18 years of age, without a job, never looking at their grades, not even asking what it is they are going to school for - and never-ever considering the future damnation to this person, when at age 22 or so - they owe what amounts to a mortgage-sized loan...without the house.

As the film shows...even during the greatest economic downturn since the depression - college tuition has risen an average of 5.3%....that is nothing less than a crime against the American people.

I agree. They are like snake oil salesmen offering the world if you will just sign on the bottom line. There is no cost-benefit analysis on whether a particular degree is worth what you pay for it. Colleges should be forced to provide open information on the relative worth of their degrees

As bad as colleges are, trade schools are worse. Many charge as much as a university and will take anyone into their programs as long as you can qualify for a loan. Trade school students are even less prepared to evaluate interest rates being charged and payment terms

Well, you have to argue WHY they require a degree now.

My job is a buyer/planner. It requires a college degree after the big company that now owns us bought out the little company I used to work for. That means that two members of my department couldn't qualify for their own jobs. No good reason for it.

My history degree is probably the least influential aspect of my work history that makes me good at my job.

Part of the problem is that Public Education has become so poor that having a diploma doesn't mean anything any more. Part of the problem is that the universities have become businesses, and they are selling a product.

Really, they are the worst combination of private and public. Keeping useless people employed (seriously, do you think any of your professors would last a WEEK in your office?) while gouging people for as much money as they can.

They couldn't be snake oil salesmen without government-backed loans. When the system was dependent on people paying their way through with part-times jobs etc...educators could not charge exorbitant tuition otherwise no one could attend. But when you have the government in the system, giving anyone a loan for the asking created an enormous demand...and what does high demand do? - it raises prices.

Take the school where my daughter attends. For many years they had the same housing halls providing apartments to a fairly consistent student population - TODAY???...HA! Student housing now covers more acreage than the school itself!! And the cost is absolutely outrageous. They have what are called "quad-housing". It is about 800 sqft. with 4 small bedrooms, two tiny bathrooms and what amounts to an efficiency kitchen/living room. The cost? $700 per month - per student. That is $2,800 a month the school is getting for 800 sq ft!!! You can rent a VERY nice apartment in a gated community with swimming pools/hot tubs etc. etc. for less than that. You realize how much money they make off these things?? Why does anyone pay this much?? Because nearlly half of the students get the housing paid for for free through government grants...most of the rest are paid for through student loans.
This is an outrage. Yet...all people do is complain, because to fix this outrages situation means less kids getting a free ride or loans without any cost upfront...you know...exactly what built the housing bubble.

I owe alot more than I'd like. I admit I was decieved when i was told about the earning power ot a Law degree. I still enjoy being a lawyer though. And I refuse to ever default on my loans no matter how much i have to pay. The Lord will help me pay for it.

I am so glad that so far my two college age kids have no debt from school. We have paid cash the whole way. I hope that by the time my last one ( he will be in college next year) we have enough funds to get him through college without getting loans. But it is forecast that the next bubble to bust is the student loans because of the economy and people unable to get a job that they went to school for. So they are either getting low paid jobs or part time jobs

Congratulations on teaching your children personal responsibility. My brother and I worked our way through, also. Our parents could well afford our educations, but wanted to teach us personal accountability and it worked, well. It taught us to "earn" our living. And fast! lol

I also know of someone who redecorated an apartment with a grant. New stuff. Also with the 40% dropout rate for college kids within the first year or two, this so-called "help" has just become another entitlement and is soaking the 50% of taxpapers who are trying to survive and provide for those that won't without us.

Interesting poll from Rasmussen today:

SNIP:

Americans overwhelmingly believe that the bigger problem with the welfare system in the United States is that there are too many overqualified recipients rather than not enough. Most also think legal immigrants should have to wait at least three years before being eligible for welfare benefits.

SNIP:

Twenty-five percent (25%) of Democrats think there should be no waiting period, compared to seven percent (7%) of Republicans and 17% of unaffiliated adults. Forty percent (40%) of Republicans, on the other hand, feel immigrants should have to wait more than five years before being eligible for welfare, a view shared by 26% of Democrats and 27% of unaffiliateds.

71% Say Too Many People Get Welfare Who Shouldn't - Rasmussen Reports™

The national survey of 1,000 Adults was conducted on August 16-17, 2011 by Rasmussen Reports. The margin of sampling error is +/- 3 percentage points with a 95% level of confidence. Field work for all Rasmussen Reports surveys is conducted by Pulse Opinion Research, LLC. See methodology.

This entire thread smells like BS to me.

There are 3 new government induced bubbles that are going to pop next. First will be the college bubble, then the green energy bubble & finally the healthcare bubble.

Education may well be a bubble, especially higher education.

A main cause of this is administrative bloat. So much money goes to administrators rather than instruction. In some cases, college administrations make more than the President and that is completely fucking absurd as well as some of the pay that college coaches get.

What you're describing are symptoms, not causes. The cost of higher education is skyrocketing because it is being heavily subsidized by the government through massive students loans. When I was in grad school I was eligible for over $20k in student loans a year, even though my school only cost about $10k. I could take the whole $20k if I wanted it, though, and just spend it on whatever. That is the reason why college tuition continues to rise so rapidly. As long as the student loan industry is out there handing out all of this money the universities will continue to raise their tuition because students can just borrow more to pay for it. Tuition is not going to stop climbing until enrollment drops and that won't happen until either the cost gets so high that people no longer think the education is worth it or graduates start defaulting on students loans en masse the way people have on mortgages. I think the latter scenario is far more likely to hit first.

Regarding the coaches' salaries, I agree some of them are probably paid way too much, but bear in mind that those sports teams are bringing in millions more to the university than even what those coaches are being paid.
