Turkey seeks ‘partly US-independent’ airpower - Hurriyet Daily News and Economic ReviewAfter having designed and manufactured several programs for its Land Force and Navy, Turkey now is seeking to go for an ambitious national program to design, develop and produce fighter jets, a process in which the country still will need foreign help.

Officials said Turkey's newly designed fighter aircraft "also would be a next-generation type, would replace the [older, U.S.-made] F-4E Phantoms and would function well with the F-16s and the F-35s." They confirmed that the new aircraft, although being capable of multi-role operations, still mostly would be meant for air-to-air fighting.
The indigenious twin-engine fighter Aircraft will be developed together with Alenia (Italy) or Embraer (Brazil). The decision will fall on April 2012 as talks are continuing. It was also a possibility that Turkey joins S.Korea and Indonesia in the KF-X project, but that possibility has been ruled out by Turkish officials as S.Korea didn't want an equal partnership in the project.
At around 2020 the Airforce will have no twin-engine aircraft. Both F-16 and F-35 are single engine. So we'll develop a twin-engine Aircraft which will replace the F-4's which will be sent to garbage at around 2020.
