Well actually Ed, the number quoted from Stiglits is roughly 350 million taken out of poverty in China. Since the average income of a Chinese is similar to the average income of a Mexican , I'll challenge that number. It is probably near 600 million people taken out of poverty. Still VERY far from the 40% of world population you usually claim ( that would be 2,800 million people, hardly the combined populations of India and China, and India is still a lot poorer than china ) .
