Lawmakers drive initiatives to get more truckers on the road

"YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (WKBN) – Every week there is news that there are many jobs available but not enough people to fill them. It is the reason WKBN 27 First News launched the Jobs Now series that airs every Tuesday.

One of the professions that keep being mentioned again and again is truck driver. Now, state lawmakers are getting involved to address the shortage."

"CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (KCRG TV9) August 22, 2017-- A major transportation company in eastern Iowa hopes a 15 percent wage increase will entice more people to join the company.

CRST+.jpg

CRST joins the national trend of being short staffed for truck drivers.

A report from the American Trucking Association shows in 2014, the trucking industry was short 38,000 drivers. This year's number is expected to reach about 100,000. And by 2024, it could climb as high as 175-thousand.

President of CRST, Cameron Holzer, says the company needs to hire at least 200 to fill the fleet, which is roughly 4,000 drivers. But even after those spots are filled, Holzer says the company will likely keep hiring new positions to expand the fleet.

"Our truck drivers go nationwide, so they're based in Iowa but they're gone for days at a time," Holzer said.

Holzer hopes the wage increase will not only keep people but keep current employees.

This shortage of drivers CRST is experiencing is nothing new."

Getting laid off of work is what welfare is meant for. At least when people get laid off, it means they WANTED TO WORK... verses being part of a perpetual cycle of families that are on welfare and then their kids, and then their kids, and then their kids... and so on.

I believe when you add in the programs like Medicaid and heating assistance and low income housing and food stamps, subsidized daycare, etc., welfare is a much more attractive package than minimum wage anywhere. I've talked to welfare moms smart enough to know that taking a job at McDonalds might make their caseworker happy, but then they'd lose their medical and their subsidized apartment and their food stamps....you don't have to have a college education to figure it out.
