State of Palestine

After upgrading status, UN officially switches from ‘Palestine’ to ‘State of Palestine’
The body now refers to Mahmoud Abbas as ‘head of state’

While legislative scholars and political pundits continue to debate the exact meaning of the upgrade of the Palestinians to a nonmember observer state, the United Nations last week officially changed the way it refers to the body: it’s now the “State of Palestine,” as opposed to merely “Palestine.”

The name change is based on an opinion by the UN’s legal department, and might not have any practical implications on the ground, Israeli officials say. But on a symbolic level, the decision will likely boost aspirations of Palestinian leaders who hope their newly gained status will help them establish a full-fledged independent state.

Immediately after the General Assembly vote to upgrade the Palestinians on November 29, UN officials still opposed Palestinian diplomats’ efforts to independently change “Palestine” to “State of Palestine” in the formal name of their permanent observer mission.

If they are a state now, surely the UN has an imperative to defend that state? :eusa_eh:

Uh-huh, and most certainly the UN is planning an invasion as we speak. Perhaps you would like to volunteer? :D

Uh Oh, "State of Palestine." How will the Palestinians survive if that means self determination without having Israel to provide for them any longer?

As the occupying power, Israel is still responsible for Palestine's welfare. The only way for Israel to drop that obligation would be to end the occupation.

According to Jos, Abbas is recognized by the UN as the State of Palestine's head-of-state. I believe you and BecauseIKnowSquat have a different opinion. Why wasn't Hamas's Haniya recognized?

It is a can of worms for sure. This is the way I understand it.

In 1964 some Palestinian groups got together and formed the Palestine Liberation Organization. (PLO)

In 1974 the UN recognized the PLO as the representatives of the Palestinian people.

In 1988 the PLO declared Palestine to be an independent state for the second time. The first time was in 1948. About a hundred countries recognized the Palestinian state. The UN did not but did change the name from PLO to Palestine.

The PA was created in 1994 as part of the Oslo accord. Arafat was appointed president. He was also still the chairman of the PLO.

Elections were held in 1996. Arafat was elected president and PLC (parliament) members were elected. Arafat was also still the chairman of the PLO.

Arafat ratified the Palestinian constitution in 2003 creating a new government in Palestine. This constitution did not mention Israel, did not mention the occupation, did not mention Oslo. There was no place in the government for the PLO. There was no mention of changing Palestine's international borders.

The UN recognizes the PLO as "Palestine" and does not recognize the government that was created and elected by the people.

I see problems down the road with the UN not recognizing the legitimate government.

so?? the borders are still disputed and what ever "palestine"
is----it has declared that it is at war with Israel and has declared
itself the aggressor as has Iran

Not true.

None of Palestine's neighbors dispute their borders.

Did the Palestinians declare this war when they went to Europe and attacked the Zionists?

The dogs of arabia declared this war upon the zionists when they raped
and pillaged their way thru Israel and judea in 637 CE In fact,
the actual war on the Zionists was initiated by the arab dogs ---eight
years earlier when they raped and pillaged and murdered their way
thru Yathrib This war has been raging now ---approx. 1380 years.
Dogs of arabia continue to occupy both ZION and JEWISH LAND IN
ARABIA

Indeed, they're happy with what french and british mandates gave them, of course. Did they earn them anyhow? Of course, not.

Nah, palistanians were busy settling the mandate through illegal immigration, of course. In memorable words of Winnie Churchill "So far from being persecuted, the Arabs have crowded into the country and multiplied till their population has increased more than even all world Jewry could lift up the Jewish population.". Brilliant.

Resolution 799. The first one I looked up:
"the Council condemned the deportations that were in violation of the Fourth Geneva Convention referring to the protection of civilians in times of war."

Shall I continue?

Do, please, the bullshitting capacity of the UN is well-known.

Sorry I'm slow. Can't be here all the time ya know.

United Nations Security Council resolution 672, adopted unanimously on 12 October 1990, after reaffirming resolutions 476 (1980), 478 (1980), the Council expressed alarm at the violence at Holy Places in Jerusalem on 8 October 1990, resulting in the death of 20 Palestinian people and the injury of 150 others, including Palestinian civilians and other worshippers.

The Council went on to condemn the actions of the Israeli security forces, calling on Israel to abide by its legal obligations under the Fourth Geneva Convention. Resolution 672 also authorised a mission to be sent to the region to investigate the incident, reporting back by the end of October 1990.

They can call themselves a kangaroo, but it still won't get them into the zoo for free.

Nor will calling them a state make them one.

They aren't a state and never will be- not here.
Well, it's not your decision to make. Nor is it Israel's. That is between the Palestinian's and the UN. It's none of Israel's god-damn business whether or not Palestine becomes a sovereign nation. You're not the king of the world and you certainly don't tell other nations what they can (and cannot) do.

But if you think you can, you go right ahead and keep trying to bully others. Because in the end, the bully always gets his ass kicked!

You are right. The Arabs have has their ass kicked !:clap2:
