Funny. As far as I know there are no State run mental facilities to care long term for anyone. And the elderly are also not in State run Homes either. But hey if you actually dig us up some links to prove your point, I will look at it.

Having been in and out of mental facilities from 95 to 2001 I know I had to pay for them and there was no State run facility for me to go to and let the State pay for it. Now I could go to the VA hospital but it is 90 miles away and I ended up with doctors that did not know me and could not help much.

But don't expect people's minds to change just because you can prove to thgem beyond a shadow of a doubt that their facts are wrong.

That isn't how it works once people get an idea in their heads.

They cling to it regardless of how often reality tells them they're wrong.

Now Lil here is of the opinion that we have huge numbers of people taken care of in state run hospitals.

RE the above I have no clue - but, having worked in education for many years, I do know that many of the women who come and have their babies here from other countries, and especially from latin america, have had no prenatal care therefore their children are born with many learning disabilities and to educate them is very costly. I heard horror stories of how these countries refuse to educate these kids! So many parents who went back to their country, came back so that this country could educate these kids. Tragic but true.

Do you remember when this was? I know there were institutions in the seventies, but I had heard they were all closed and many of these mentally ill ended up on the streets. Don't know about the whole country.

The great "business is better than government" fraud is revealed best when it comes to service is found in the outpatient sourcing of the mentally disabled and the foster care of children beginning in the later seventies.

I believe in orphanages if they are modular based on a community public school system, community health system, faith based agencies without agendas, and committed familes as group forms patterned on Big Brothers and Big Sisters. Closing the majority of orphanages since WWII has been of the great cultural crimes in our history.

State Mental Institutions are run by the state government paid for by tax payers. And they are full of mentally disabled children and adults.
Rest homes across the country are State run paid for by Medicare and Medicaid. and tax payers money
Do a little research and get away from happy hour.
I have worked in all these places and was paid by the STATE.

Most of those in mental health instituions are white and not Hispanic. THey take care of their own.

Inhofe slams health reform

At a town hall meeting Wednesday Sen. Jim Inhofe (R-Okla.) told Chickasha residents he does not need to read the 1,000 page health care reform bill, he will simply vote against it.
"I don't have to read it, or know what's in it. I'm going to oppose it anyways," he said.

This is typical of right wingers and town hall meeting. I don't think some of them can even read.

Inhofe said public opinion and information provided by news media have helped him become a staunch non-supporter of the bill. He said he would prefer waiting until after mid-term elections in 2010 to enact reforms. He did not say nothing should be done. He simply feels that a topic as important as healthcare should not be rushed through the Senate or House of Representatives.

City Council Member Hank Ross agreed with Inhofe. Ross owns a medical care company in Chickasha. He said he does not believe the government would be efficient in providing care and would like to see reforms happen at a slower pace.

GO figure. Efficeint or not we have hundreds of govenment run programs.

Entitlement to a public nursing home place
Everyone is eligible for a place in a public nursing home (but may have to pay certain hospital charges). Under the Health Acts, everyone is eligible for public in-patient services. Most people in public nursing homes and similar institutions are getting in-patient services. In practice, there are not enough public nursing home places available and there are no clear rules about who is entitled to get priority in the allocation of places.

Section 52 of the Health Act 1970 (as amended by the Health (Amendment) Act 1991) obliges the HSE to provide in-patient services for everyone. In-patient services are “institutional services provided for people while maintained in a hospital, convalescent home, or home for persons suffering from physical or mental disability or in accommodation ancillary thereto”.

It seems that Section 52 of the 1970 Act includes an entitlement to public long stay care because of the definition of in-patient services (subject to long stay charges). This entitlement is available to everyone but there are no rules for deciding who is to get a public long stay place. In theory, everyone is entitled but it is accepted that there are not enough places available.

SI 224/93 the Health (In-Patient Services) Regulations 1993 provides that if in-patient services under Section 52 of the 1970 Act are being provided to a person in a registered nursing home, the rules which apply are the Nursing Homes Act rules.

There are no set rules about who may get a public nursing home place. In general, the following occurs:

If you want to avail of public nursing home care, your needs are assessed by the HSE.
This assessment of need is concerned with such matters as your housing, your social situation, your family support and your health.
If no public place is available, the HSE may provide a contracted bed in a private nursing.

It appears that the state mental health institution at Cherokee is safe from closing by the state - for now at least.

That was the impression that Emmet County Mental Health Coordinator Dorothy Christensen offered the Emmet County Board of Supervisors Tuesday. Christensen said the state Mental Health Institution Closure Task Force will meet at Cherokee Tuesday, Sept. 15 - the first of four such meetings - to weigh which one of four mental health institutions in Iowa will be closed.

Christensen said she did not believe Cherokee would be targeted for a number of reasons: the fact that the state houses convicted sex offenders on the Cherokee MHI campus, that the center serves a large geographic area and that the YES Center is located on the MHI campus.

"The state's going to save money but it's going to cost the rest of us more," Christensen said.

The town of Cherokee has taken a number of major hits over the last several years, including closing of a meat processor and a garment manufacturer. The mental health institute has been a fixture in the community for decades. There are 152 employees at the 110-bed facility.

In another issue related to mental health, Christensen noted an increase in the federal share of Medicaid payments covering Title XIX costs. As a result, Christensen said the county's share of the cost decreased from 37 percent to 29 percent.

Christensen also discussed the state payment program waiting list in which affected individuals live in Emmet County but do not have residency here. She said the county is reimbursed the full amount for services provided to those persons. She said the county serves about 13 state cases.

Christensen did note that the state had appropriated $12 million for the state payment program and that a waiting list may have to be instituted - something Christensen said could be a hardship for clients.

Christensen also noted there are some questions about what information CPCs - or the Central Point of Coordination, another name for county mental health coordinators - can have regarding mental health commitments.

The Legislative Task Force on Mental Health was another issue Christensen discussed. She noted a proposal before the Legislature last year that counties share mental health service areas of a minimum population of 100,000. Another proposal was to remove the cap on county mental health levies.

Christensen also commented on a press release from the Iowa Department of Human Service director's office suggesting a statewide mental health system which would in effect eliminate the current county mental health system. Christensen said the state has not met its 1995 pledge to fund gro
