Let me start by acknowledging that I'm new around these parts. Allow me to go further and say that I haven't always lived up to the code of conduct I wish I had on these boards.

That being said, is it possible that we could all have a "come-to-Jesus" meeting about a few topics?

1. Insults - are they really necessary? You might come on here to vent against your enemies in the most vile way possible, but I don't think that's the purpose of the forum. Let me know if I'm wrong about that.

2. Sweeping categorization - "Conservatives just think they own the world." "Libtards want to shred the constitution." - talk like this is as surgical as a rusty spork. All libs and all conservatives don't ALL agree all the time.

I realize we're mostly adults here and that it's very easy to say "just don't take things so seriously"...but isn't that a cop out? I mean why waste the energy to post this stuff and try to engage others in conversation if it's just going to devolve so quickly?

Again, let me repeat, I'm not trying to act holier than thou...was just appealing to everyone's better instincts to see if we could dial it back on these two issues. I realize that internet forums are free for alls (I go to one where posting the vilest thing possible IS the purpose of the whole place) and anywhere else this might just be spitting into the rain.

I'm going to make a renewed effort on my part. Anybody with me?

You make some good points but i hate centrist more than anything else. I view them as people who have no real opinions because their job is to agree with everyone else. Its the same 'lets be in the middle disease' that this country has.

Shut the hell up you worthless Libtard!!!!

I'm not asking everyone to be Centrists. I'm not even asking everyone to come to an agreement about a particular topic. Disagree all you want...just can we do it without the crass overgeneralizations and insults that muck everything up?

(BTW, I see acknowledge your point about Centrists. One way of looking at the IS to think that it's simply giving up and wanting a kind of fake agreement. To me, Centrism is going with either side - whichever has the better idea. Neither side has the better answer 100% of the time. Centrism acknowledges that)

Anyway...was hoping for a little more civil disagreement is all.

Here in reality, pretty much everything has a middle-ground and it's much better than the extremes. Socrates called them virtues.

Don't like socialism? Fine, i don't either. But you know where unfettered capitalism leads? Monopolies, which basically equates to total corporate rule. You wouldn't want that any more than you'd want total government control.

For shits and giggles, let's take eating habits. One side of the extreme is gluttony, the other is anorexia (basically). I can't think of any reason to argue for one being better than the other as both are extremely unhealthy, thus you'll find most people somewhere around the middle.

You're basically backseat moderating. I don't disagree with anything you've said here, but this won't do any good. If someone is here to be loud and unreasonable, this won't stop them. In fact, it might only encourage them as it's a lot easier to be loud and unreasonable from behind the safety of a vague user name than it is anywhere in real life.

You make a fine point. I wasn't trying to backseat moderate, but I can see that as a valid view of my post. The chances always were 999 out of 1000 that no one would join in, but I thought I'd take the chance.

I'm all for a higher level of dialogue. I have hope that we will see it someday. But I don't see a problem with labels if they are accurate.

Just saying.

It's never going to happen. Just focus on doing all those things yourself and allow others to make a fool of themselves if they want.

All I can say is lead by example. Ignore the posts that don't meet your standards and only respond to those posters who are cordial and avoid extreme rhetoric, insults and generalizations.

You do not owe anyone a response and you can debate those who post on similar terms

According to Wikipedia: In politics, centrism is the ideal or the practice of promoting moderate policies which lie between different political extremes

define:centralist - Google Search

If this is what you mean by centralist, I strongly disagree with you. Because someone is a moderate does not mean they don’t have strong opinions and are willing to standup for them. The centralists are what hold this country together. Without them the radical extremes of the far right and left would tear this country apart.

Insults and character assassinations are to be expected. As it says in the FAQs, if you have a think skin, you best avoid this board. Many people on these boards are here just to start and win arguments with the opposition. Their interest in your post is to find some point they can take issue with. But there are some who may disagree with you but are genuinely interested in hearing what you have to say and you may just be able to convert them to your point of view, but don't count on it. Unfortunately there are many whose opinions are so deeply rooted in political dogma that they are not open to change regardless of the facts.

Around the middle? Eating? :D

Are you whoring for rep?

ha ha ha. Nah. Not whoring. I tried to make the post as humble and as unassuming as possible. Of course even that gets seen as either naive or rep whoring. Oh well, you can't win 'em all.

Flopper, you make a good point about thin skin. That's not where I'm coming from though. I'm part of a forum board where people say the vilest things you can think of and we never take it personally and just laugh it off. Even about personal, political, racial and sexual stuff. (Pedo bear likes this post!)

Was just thinking out loud I suppose. Oh well, it was worth a shot.
