They had at least two agents at Las Alamos (David Greenglass, Ethel Rosenberg's brother being one of them)

What is remarkable is how little they knew, considering how many folks worked on the Manhattan project.

And later on, it was a real source of worry to the US that the only large known concentrations of uranium ore were under Soviet control.
