Fig cookies, stuffed artichokes and whole fish are being prepared in schools, churches and home kitchens throughout the New Orleans area in preparation for annual St. Joseph Day altar displays.
St. Joseph's Day is Tuesday, March 19, but a smattering of the altars in the New Orleans area will be open over the weekend and on Monday, Monday 18.
Making altars to honor St. Joseph, the patron saint of Sicily, began in the Middle Ages, when Sicilians created the displays to give thanks for relief for famine.
When Sicilian immigrants came to New Orleans, they brought the tradition with them, with most, at one time, taking place in private homes.
