SS & Medicare.. Bankrupt

I guess we had to steal the money from the second weakest group in our society. the children have no money.

Actually the boomers/Xers/Yers paid into SS and Medicare so that when they retire they would have a pension and healthcare. Some paid about $300,000 over their working lives. Multiply that by about 100,000,000 retirees and you end up with about 30,000,000,000,000 in benefits owed.

SS will go bankrupt in 2037 and Medicare in 2017. Fixing SS is easy, fixing Medicare will be tough. Lets say that sickest 5% of the population uses ~50% of medical resources, and that ~25% of medical resources are used on the dying. So fixing Medicare is actually simple too if you don't mind denying care to the "gomers" and dying and incurable.

I can't wait to see which party actually throws the dying under the bus since they pissed away the windows that they could have used to fix the system.

ahh but you do not take into account those who will die before drawing anything from SS or who will die before drawing out a fraction of what they paid in.

All factors must be entered into the equasion for it to apporach validity.

Over 180K is in my account paid by me or my employer but I will die without drawing a penny. My survivors will get a $200 or so death benefit.

they stole it from those who earned and will give it to those who didn't.. it's re distribution of wealth.

They didn't steal it yet. Its a theft in-progress. I hope the GOP runs on stopping Obamacare and on fixing SS & Medicare. Stay-tuned....don't give up on stopping Obama. I know a lot of Obama voters with voters-remorse. They won't make the same mistake in 2012.

Yes, they are just getting started. Must ram everything possible, through, before they start running away, in November. Total partisan corrupt politicians. Voting and ramming everything through, that the citizens don't want and can't afford. We will all be taxed in one way or another. This is about government control and power...nothing else. Socialism. *chills*

AquaAthena...Pssst... it's politically incorrect to say, Socialism or mention redistribution of wealth. (even though it's true)

SS is now running a deficit for the first time ever
According to Social Security they did run a deficit for first time in 2009 due to the recession. The deficit is expected to remain the same in 2010 then briefly change to a surplus then return to a deficit in 2016 where it will slowly increase for a number of years due the number of baby boomers hitting retirement age. Social Security tax will have to increase.

Medicare is even worse now that they've taken $500B away from it to cook the CBO books for ObamaCare.

Just sayin'.
Thank God, congress cut out that amount of waste in Medicare, making it more efficient.

Really when and how did that happen? with the wave of a pen?
Political tool would have been a better name.

Even if they did run on it.... there is no evidence to support the theory that they would actually DO anything.

I'm tired of politicians lying to me. I doubt I'd vote Republican no matter what they promise. I am definitely NOT voting Dem - because I despise Obama's agenda.*

*Explanation for the terminally stupid (mainly truthdon'tmatter): despising an agenda is not the same as despising the person.

The wealthiest nation in the world bankrupted.

You'll probably find this hard to understand, but that's quite a common fate for nation/empires that were formerly the wealthiest nations on earth.

When a nation cannot afford to take care of its people, then the people cannot afford to take care of the nation.

Unemployment insurance is in the same boat. Most people never had a problem with the payroll tax just in case they ever needed it. But like everything govt run, states are running out of cash because of rampant fraud and abuse. Zoom asks how this will be addressed. Still no answers.

Fraud isn't the problem we're dealing with.

People not being able to find jobs certainly is.

Right now, we are informed, there are 6 people seeking work for every job that is looking for a worker.

Some employers, we're informed, in some fields, are desperately looking for workers.

Sadly, the workforce we have doesn't have the skills they need.

I know lots of educated people who are unemployed or under-employed.

I'm one of those, actually.

While I am making a living, I'm not remotely working as much as I could, and I am still not likely to find a job suited to what and who I am, despite my rather good education.

I'm too old for an entry level position, and too long out of the workforce for a position suited to my skills and maturity.

I would not hire me for the jobs I am equipped to do, either.

Why?

Because I'd know perfectly well I could hire somebody younger to do what I can do, plus somebody more likely to be able to grow with the company over the next ten or twenty years.

Depending on your age, there are windows of employment opportunity.

Miss those windows and your are screwed unless you get lucky.

All these entitlments are broke.

Now we have another huge entitlement thanks to the clowns in Congress and Barry's PROGRESSIVE agenda.

Makes sense to me. NOT

I see the VAT tax commin down the pike folks. More taxes. Oh Yes.

So very true. I know that if I was forced to go back to work I would never find a job that would suit me, my education, and general experience background.

This is all true and that is what the system counts on, but the current liabilities that they are anticipating must include payments to you through your life expectancy. It only becomes a bonus to them once you are finally history. Sorry for putting that so bluntly.

Oh and for the record, the whooping big check your survivors is $255 not $200. You should stop trying to make the government look so cheap.

What To Do When A Beneficiary Dies

Oh and look at this part:

A family member or other person responsible for the beneficiary's affairs should do the following:

*

Promptly notify Social Security of the beneficiary's death by calling SSA toll-free at 1-800-772-1213. (TTY 1-800-325-0778.)
*

If monthly benefits were being paid via direct deposit, notify the bank or other financial institution of the beneficiary's death. Request that any funds received for the month of death and later be returned to Social Security as soon as possible.
*

If benefits were being paid by check, DO NOT CASH any checks received for the month in which the beneficiary died or thereafter. Return the checks to Social Security as soon as possible.

So if you die while receiving benefits on the 30th of the month, you have to give everything back that was received between the 1st and the end of the month. But don't forget, you do get $255 death benefits.

Top secret Mr. Fitnah... And while Zoom has been asking where the money is, I've been wondering why they don't return that extra $500 billion they will be saving on Medicare to Medicare, which we know is running out of cash. It hurts my head to think about it, so hopefully we'll get a clarification when that money is finally located.

Anything yet????

I wish you luck editec. But here in NJ, our UI fund has been raided for years by politicians. Just like the state pension and I assume SS and Medicare at the federal level. That's our money that was to be earmarked for older citizens that has been used for other purposes.

And in NJ, seasonal workers have have taken far more than they've contributed. I know many women who work in the summer, not only for the extra cash, but simply to qualify for the winter entitlement. There should be limits to that.
