UPDATE 1-Winter storms to distort US jobless figures-Summers

WASHINGTON, March 1 (Reuters) - White House economic adviser Larry Summers said on Monday winter blizzards were likely to distort U.S. February jobless figures, which are due to be released on Friday.

"The blizzards that affected much of the country during the last month are likely to distort the statistics. So it's going to be very important ... to look past whatever the next figures are to gauge the underlying trends," Summers said in an interview with CNBC, according to a transcript....

in nc you have a 2 week waiting period after you file...so you have to be out of work a week and then wait a week for the check....so not here....

That's what I thought. Now I'm sure money was lost. Some businesses may well have gone down, but reflected by Friday's numbers? That sounds a little unlikely.

o this winter has had an impact...on stores etc....for some it will be good for some it wont...but it has not hit the stats yet...and it wont be in the unemployment stats...think about restaurants etc....how the storms have done them....we had storms on major holidays...new years....valentines....

A really lame, last-minute grasping at straws for an excuse.

I agree. Those numbers must be really bad...

and wouldnt it be wonderful if the numbers werent.....people need to stop rejoicing in the faults and failures of this administration...and pull together...i wonder if any president will ever be able to unite this country?

I'm not rejoicing, indeed I fear I'll be collecting unemployment in a few months. There's a world of difference between rejoicing in failure and the agreement to take the country off a cliff to bankruptcy. We may well all get to see a 'world without America' as we've known it.

There's a BIG difference between poking fun at and rejoicing. I DO get a bit of smug satisfaction from the fact Obama has turned out to be exactly as I predicted he would.

Hard to unite a country when half its population is out to turn it into something it was never meant to be.

I wasn't aware "rabid conservatives" wanted to turn the US into a socialist, nanny state "utopia".

So long as the moderates in the middle allow the extremists on both sides to speak for them. it will continue as it has.

The fancy name now is "earmarks" and IMO, if Congress wants to pass legislation, they should make "earmarks" illegal.

But that wouldn't serve their personal gain, would it?

It's been going on for a while. They must be running out of straws by now.

o now now you are gonna fall if you keep leaning to the right so much....i have qualms with both sides...being a social liberal and a fiscal conservatives ...or as is yelled at me many times...i want the social programs...just dont wanna pay for them...that is untrue...government has taken on a life of its own..that is not needed..many states have gone a long ways in saving money by simpling cutting out ...outdated programs.....you cant help but see a lot of out dated programs in the federal government that have simply become "mini states" of their own...we all know the motto of the federal governments segments...spend.....so you will get at least that amount of more the next fiscal year...look how large the federal government is.....it has become the 'white elephant'

You won't get an argument out of me on that. I just didn't get all into detail with my comment in earmarks. Our government IS out for control, and it isn't just this administration. The only bipartisanship we have is the Federal government perpetuating itself and serving itself while deftly keeping the taxpayers squabbling over some notion that they actually believe in two separate political ideals.

Simply put, I would like to decide for myself how much I help others. I do not need my money taken from me and given to someone else.

No one has the right to 'redistribute' the wealth of others. No one has the right to say someone else has too much. You work for yours, I'll work for mine. You need help, you ask me and I am very likely to help you out - because it is the right thing to do.

This country was not set up to be 'socially liberal', we are a Republic. We are not Socialist, Marxist, Communist or any other 'ist'. We are supposed to have just enough government to keep the country from anarchy. Everything else is up for grabs.

If it weren't for Obama's "Redistribution of Wealth" policies a little snow would have zero effect on businesses.

But because everyone is on the edge because of a drop in consumer confidence....well there you are.
