You have to define what you mean by welfare. Some people consider Medicare or Social Security Welfare. Others restrict the definition to food stamps, SSI, Hud programs, TANF, aid families and dependent children. They there are job programs, work study programs, and head start. Most of the costs are shared between state and federal, although some are pure federal programs and others are just state programs. Perhaps part of the problem is the game people play when defining what programs are actually WELFARE.
How many people are on welfare?
What are their ages statistically?
How much do all those welfare programs actually cost the USA every year?
Now one would think that those numbers would be all over the place.

With winter approaching, it's hard to imagine the size of the protest will really grow, at least not in New York. After coming to the top of the escalator at the DC Convention Centers Metro station I witness a group of OccupyDC protesters fighting with convention center security guards while trying to blockade an entrance to the center. Shockingly the protesters had purposely placed two children at the center of the ordeal. After the kids and several protesters were pushed back from the door by security I asked the mother why she had intentionally placed her young children in harms way. She and several other protesters justified the act to me while one other protester expressed dissatisfaction with the decision.
