Sony Trinitron (CRT-TV): Design Derby

Sony's Trinitron was a special brand of CRT-TVs which sold well until the invention of the flat-screen thin-edge TV made tube-sets obsolete.

The Trinitron was arguably the best CRT ever released into the market, and the special tube Trinitron Wega flat-screen CRT-TVs (released as the last major CRT marketing campaign) were highly critically praised.

The Trinitron boasted elegant and packed in design and offered consumers a very ergonomic and handsome exterior design scheme. Many Trinitrons came with a wood finish until the Trintron Wega (which sold well in the late 1990s to early 2000s) came as all non-wood finish advanced flat screen tube sets.

The Sony Trinitron was as symbolic to the consumer market as was the Apple Macintosh and the JVC boom-box, which suggests that the Trinitron will always be remembered as the finest tube TV (flat screen or otherwise) --- a nice boon for the electronics industry which continues to showcase nice economic relations between otherwise disagreeing nations such as America and Japan.

We're still using our 1985 19" Trinitron in the basement rec room. Picture isn't sharp anymore, but for having something to watch during morning exercises, it does its job. The signal via rabbit ears is routed through a Zinwell programmable converter.

When we have it and the TV in the parlor on the same channel at the same time, there's a slight "echo" effect. I attribute that to the fact that the signal is slightly delayed by having to pass through the converter. The main TV is fed by a roof antenna strapped to the chimney.

We didn't used to get Ch 3 in the basement. It was the only low-power network station in the valley. I guess the network applied some pressure and the station upgraded to the level of its local peers and now we get all the high-power signals of the 60-odd OTA channels in the basement, too.
