Of course it was, at least partly, but can you really blame them? After being so horrendously persecuted in this country for centuries how could they help but feel enormous pride and hope is seeing a black man become president? That said, black Americans voted overwhelmingly for Clinton, Gore and Kerry despite the fact that none of these offered anything to them that would substantially improve their lives.

In fact, black voters have been loyal to the Democrats ever since FDR was in office, despite the fact that FDR opposed a federal lynching law that liberal Democrats like Eleanor strongly supported. During the 1940's and 1950's black voters consistently supported Democratic candidates for national office despite the fact the each year from 1945 through 1957 Republicans in the House proposed civil rights legislation that Democrats in the Senate killed. In 1957, Eisenhower sent down to Congress the civil rights bill that eventually passed in 1964. It passed overwhelmingly in the House, but it was opposed in the Senate by the usual suspects and by John Kennedy and Lyndon Johnson. Kennedy voted to keep it in committee until all enforcement provision is the bill were removed and Johnson refused to allow it to come to a vote until this was done. The deneutered bill that was finally passed amounted to nothing more than a sense of the Senate resolution in support of civil rights but with no practical value. Nevertheless, in 1960 the Kennedy-Johnson ticket was overwhelmingly supported by black voters.

Why did Johnson champion the bill i 1964 that he had opposed in 1957? Because the Democrats had owned the black vote since FDR was in office and Johnson was not going to risk losing any part of it by allowing a Republican president pass critical civil rights legislation.

It all stems from the NAACP. The NAACP was founded by socialists with the vision of using the organization to influence left winged political action. Althouth Eisenhauer, began the fight for CIvil Rights, it was under LBJ that the legislation was inacted, so the credit went to the democrat party. In addition, MLK was a left winger as well.

Even though the NAACP has not done anything for blacks since that time, they don't need to apparently. In the minds of minorities, a vote for the democrats is a vote for Civil Rights and any voter who votes for the GOP is an uncle Tom, even if it is a black candidate like Caine.
