You know that Akin is going to win his seat, right?
Senate and House races are local affairs. I don't think he will win, but if he does, c'est la vie. Unfortunately, Akin's "Legitimate Rape can't result in Pregnancy" comment is a major anchor around Paul Ryan's neck on the national level, and what drags down Ryan drags down Romney.
The GOP stepping in and starting to support Akin again allows Obama to bring Akin back up again and force Romney to disavow his blatant stupidity. And yes, it is blatant stupidity.

It's fascinating what the nutters will bitterly cling to in order to maintain such a high level of cognitive dissonance.
In '08 they were saying McCain would win thanks to some bullshit "People will say publicly they'll vote for a black man, but in the privacy of the booth...." effect. Didn't materialize then either.
Oversampling is just the newest one.

Yeah, no kidding. A smart national campaign would have taken Akin out to the woodshed, slapped him around, and left him there to lose on his own. Focus on some other races and write the idiot off.
The problem is the GOP is doing so badly now that they NEED Akin to win. The Problem, capital P, is that by going in to support Akin you literally screw up the other races you should have won.

What that analysis misses, is that McCaskill has been keeping her powder dry until after the dropout deadline. She's now ready to throw everything at Akin. You do remember who she beat six years ago, don't you? Do you think Akin is a better politician than Roy Blunt?

Barack Obama is the most divisive character in American politics since Abraham Lincoln. He seeks and has to some extent delivered, fundamental, structural change to the nation, both in economic terms and in the method of government.
We all know that this election is critical. If Obama wins a second term, then the structure and fabric of America will be altered forever. There are some who applaud the adoption of a more authoritarian government and an economic policy that more closely resembles China or Cuba, with the federal government an active participant in production, setting goals and deciding which companies thrive, and which fold. A nation where political power and pull, rather than appeal to the market, is the means of success. There are others who see this as suicide, the end of America and the dream that anyone with a vision and hard work could succeed.
This election decides whether we continue the vision of Jefferson and Madison, or whether we transform into another Eurosocialist quagmire. Obama sees no reason that Americans should enjoy a standard of living that is better than that of the average Nigerian, and will work to make us level with the third world.
So both sides will campaign hard - we are at a pivot point where everything changes.
