Stupid.

Had an accident on a train line this afternoon. Its been all over the news. Train carrying 13 people crashed into a truck, which had obviously seen the train but thought it could get across the line in time. Only an idiot would think that they could. Massive damage, train was derailed, and early reports suggest that at least one person is dead.

Some people see those warning lights, but they try to beat the train anyway, and the train comes along and flattens them. Then the do gooders come out and say that if the crossing had boom gates, it wouldn't have happened. WTF happened to STOPPING and waiting until the train has crossed? WTF happened to looking both ways before you drive across those tracks?

And when the media reports it, its always 'a train hit a truck', or a train hit a car' or 'a train hit a person'. The freaking train didn't hit anything, the idiot on the tracks hit the train! If a car is on the tracks, the car hits the train. The train has right of way.

Sometimes I think that level crossing deaths are just another way of nature wiping all the idiots from the gene pool.

Sadly, too commonplace to receive a Darwin Award, but stupid nonetheless.

Why do you have an avatar of abusing a horse by placing a saddle and bridle on it?

You know why people often think they can beat the train, right?

The current theory is that people simply cannot imagine that large objects can be moving as fast as they are.

"In 1985, the theory was presented that we underestimate the speed of large objects," says Cohn, a researcher with PATH (Partners for Advanced Transit and Highways).

I suspect there's a LOT to this theory.

After all, we are also informed by experts in human perception that about 85% of what we think we see is actually what our past experience tells us we MUST be seeing.

Vision and perception of what we see is a lot less about what our eyes tell us than it is what our brains INTUIT we are seeing.

Now if that is true with stationary objects, imagine how much more trouble the brain has identifying and determining the trajectory and speed of objects that our brains are ALSO processing based on past experience.

Another thing that causes accidents that make people look really REALLY stupid (when they're really not quite so stupid as we first think) is when people are dealing with moving objects that pass through their their BLIND SPOTS.

Of course never underestimate what a lack of "better safe than sorry sense" that most younger drivers have yet to develop, too.

Does not have that air of sensationalism otherwise.

Ever see a C-5A Galaxy fly? The largest aircraft in the US military. You simply can't believe it's moving fast enough to stay airborne. Looks like it's putting along at 30 mph.

Here is what happens when a car hits a train.

When a train hits a car the car usually ends up in little pieces on the side of the track.

See the difference?

They do make a distinctive sound. :)

But saying the train hits the car is like saying it was the trains fault. The train has right of way, and the right to be on the tracks. The car does not.

^^^ Exactly. A train can not be stopped in time anyway no matter why anything is on the track in front of it.

God bless you always!!! :) :) :)

And do they have a theory about why idiots ignore the flashing lights which are not in their BLIND SPOTS, and which indicate a fast moving large object is coming?

In this video the truck was crossing legally - but got stuck in a pothole a minute before the train came. The train brakes were activated before the video starts. Notice how long it takes the train to stop.
