When to lower the flag for Canada's war dead

CBC News Online | April 24, 2006

Four more Canadian soldiers are killed in Afghanistan and once again the flags on Parliament Hill are not lowered to half-mast.

Judging by talk shows and some letters to the editor, some Canadians are upset by this, calling it a show of disrespect for those who lay down their lives for their country. They also note that the former Liberal administration routinely lowered the Peace Tower flag in honour of a lost soldier.

But the policy the new Conservative government has adopted – it also didn't lower Parliament's flags when three Canadian soldiers were killed in March – is probably more in keeping with the way Canada has always looked at its fallen warriors.

It's a return to normal protocol. Chretien chose to politicize the death of four soldiers in Afghanistan through US friendly fire, and lowered the flags to half-mast. Harper is returning to the normal way Canadians honour the death of their soldiers, on November 11th - Rememberence Day. This has nothing to do with nationality.

Canada's war dead, they said, should all be honoured the same way and on the same date, Nov. 11, when the country pauses to remember.
