The post brings to mind the 2000 Bush/Gore stalemate in Florida. According to reports the army of Gore lawyers were "high-fiving" each other every time a bag of unopened US Military votes were thrown in the garbage for a minor technicality. The Gore people correctly assumed that the majority of Military votes from ships and foreign bases would not favor Gore.
