Soldiers and their demons

Hi.

The father of my wife died last year. He was a soldier in WW2, started 1938 in the age of 18 and returned 1952 from soviet prisoner of war imprisonment. He fought in africa, normandy, greek, yugoslavia, ardennes etc.

That was a very tough guy who didn´t discuss long. But on his last days, i could see how his demons went over him. We only talked a little over what he´d seen and did in the war but what he told and how hee looked was enough for me. After a long life of struggling, his demons defeated him at least.

Thanks god, i was never in war services (i made my services as aparamedic instead). Today I feel sorry that I didn´t talked more to him but I really don´t know if that would have helped.

You, as a nation full of veterans from 6 and more wars, how do you handle them?
And you, the veterans of all these wars, what do you have for wishes to your country today? I think, especially the vietnam veterans did have a very hard return, I remember the Paul Hardcastle songtext line in "19" "none of them recieved the heroes welcome"
