A solar-powered calculator (SPC) is a handheld electronic device powered by solar energy, since it is constructed with solar cells that create a photovoltaic effect.

Solar-powered calculators do not require batteries in most cases.

These nifty little new age gadgets represent a civilization investment in energy utilization, and we can think about how their efficiency appeal helps eco-activists advertise the draw of solar energy and solar-powered homes and communities.

If you think solar energy is not useful or efficient, just pick up a solar-powered calculator at RadioShack or Best Buy.

Since we're still dealing with climate change deniers and Ozone rebukers, we could consider how offbeat 'energy-tunnel' devices such as the clever SPC symbolize 'mind-opening economics.'

How old are you?

I had one in the 1970s

Didn't you find that that it often let you down at night and in bad weather? Didn't you find it necessary to also maintain sufficient batteries to operate your calculator on their own, thus making the whole thing twice as expensive?

Power consumption of that calculator is about 3 volts at 3000ma/hr.. Not even enough to light a flashlight bulb.

How well does it work at night? In the cold? Under water? In space?

3000 ma/hr? Is that like 3 A/hr? Why, exactly, is the "/hr" in there Billy? An amp is a coulomb per second. Does the calculator only run for one hour or is this a big capacitor you're charging? I think I can guarantee you, Mr Physicist, that calculator isn't drawing 3 amps for even a microsecond.
