What "damage" did he cause? As far as I'm concerned, he did this country a great service, and he didn't go far enough. The term "witch hunts" assumes the people being investigate are innocent. However, all the declassified government documents we have from the era show that everyone McCarthy called to testify who took the Fifth Amendment were members of the Communist party or even Soviet spies.
How does outing people like that cause harm to this country?
This viral e-mail turd has been around for two years and is easily debunked, I wonder what made a congressman post this to his website? Maybe he knows his followers will swallow lies rather than do their own fact checking? Only cold war relics are still scared of communists.

The date is April 11, 2012. The Soviet Union was overthrown in 1991. All of its Eastern European satellite governments were overthrown the same year or slightly before. Mao Tze Tung died in 1976 and China immediately began divesting itself of all vestiges of Communism except the party name, a process that is quite complete today. Vietnam followed suit, and today is no more Communist than China.
The remaining Communist countries other than nominally are, I believe, two, Cuba and North Korea. Both countries are small, poor, and hardly in a position to threaten the world.
So where are these Communists you're referring to? Inquiring minds want to know.
You need to pay better attention then when they talk. And watch what they do. Actually,actions speak louder than words.
