So Much for the Fiscal Conservative...the Boehner Hires $5 Million Dollar Lawyer

Former Solicitor General Paul Clement Signs Up to Defend Marriage Law

That's right...the weepy orange Boehner has hired a $5 million dollar a year lawyer to defend the Unconstitutional Defense of Marriage Act.

Funny that he won't disclose how much he is paying Mr. Clement.

So much for being fiscally responsible...or transparent.
You just said in yer' post that it's $5,000,000.00.

That's what he usually makes. The Boehner won't disclose how much the House is paying him.

Excuse MS, he clearly has a reading comprehension problem.

$5 million is a small price to pay to keep gays from marrying.

They can take the money from SCHIP, tell kids they can get their doctors back once the threat of gay marriage is gone

"...from Boehner to House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) makes clear that King & Spalding will charge at least some fee for the work."

So how'd you make the leap from "at least some fee" to "Boehner Hires $5 Million Dollar Lawyer." Just conveniently fits your agenda? Wet dream?

  1. He is not hiring him, the House of Representatives is.
  2. The law may, or may not, be unconstituional. Obama declaring it so does not make it so.
  3. He is taking the money from the existing budget, so it is not going to cost you one penny more than it would if he had not hired him.
  4. He is not disclosing the cost because it has not been paid yet.
  5. Where did you pull the $5 million from?

So do tell how much did it cost the American Taxpayer when Obama was defending DOMA-- something he said he was against?

I'm curious as to where your 5 million dollar figure came from.

It's $500k. And to top it off, Boehner wants the Justice Dept to pay for the lawyer. You can't make this shit up.

House Republicans Paying Outside Counsel $500,000 To Uphold Defense Of Marriage Act

On Monday, House Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) requested that the Justice Department hand over "the funds it would have otherwise expended defending the constitutionality of DOMA."

"The hypocrisy of this legal boondoggle is mind-blowing," Pelosi spokesman Drew Hammill said in a statement to The Huffington Post. "Speaker Boehner is spending half a million dollars of taxpayer money to defend discrimination. If Republicans were really interested in cutting spending, this should be at the top of the list."

Now head of King & Spalding’s appellate practice, Clement is rumored to be raking in $5 million a year—a figure seemingly confirmed during a panel discussion in July about the future of DC law firms. One of the panelists, O’Melveny & Myers’s DC managing partner Brian Brooks, let slip that O’Melveny had been in the running to land “a top DOJ official” but dropped out of the bidding when the annual ante reached $5 million—with three years guaranteed. “Everybody in the know knew it was Paul,” says a lawyer who attended the event.

Brooks dispelled remaining doubts when, moments later, he quipped that former solicitors general now “make $5 million a year.”

ThinkProgress » Boehner Hires $5 Million Lawyer To Defend Unconstitutional Law

But wait...Think Progress (an organization that actual does something called "investigative journalism" (Fox should look into it)) has found out how much "the House" is paying this guy:

$520 an hour to defend this unconstitutional law.

Obama is not defending it anymore. Boehner and company want to waste taxpayer money on this unconstitutional law.

I shouldn't say the fees are definitely $500k. That's what Boehner wants the Justice Dept to hand over. Who knows what the actual fees will be? The point is, either way, this is an unconstitutional law that Obama does not want to defend. If Boehner wants to defend it, let him collect the money from right-wing lobbyists.

It's the justice departments responsibility to defend the act. It's the law of the land. If they won't do it, then the money should come from their budget.

Nowhere, in the actual article, does it state that it will cost $5m..... however, it is unsurprising that you don't get basic facts right.

$5 mil is what he usually makes. He's giving his services to the House for the bargoon price of $520 an hour! You think this is "fiscal conservatism"?

They are not required to defend a law they deem unconstitutional. Like the Sgt said, let the winger groups like American Family Association or their ilk to fund it. (Good suggestion Sgt)
