On December 3, 2012, President Barack Obama warned Syria that the use of chemical weapons would be “totally unacceptable.” It was a red line not to be crossed.

That was two weeks ago. Today it's a different story, what with the immaculate concussion and Oblamers vacation in Hawaii to celebrate the infidels Christmas. Who has time to remember those 'Red Lines'.

obama really thinks he's worshipped as much around the world as he is here. That's the problem with religion. It has no power outside of its own believers.

Something to think about. Liberals would support obama using such weapons on rebels in the US.

Another Defection!...

Syria crisis: Military police chief al-Shalal defects
26 December 2012 - Lieutenant-General Abdulaziz al-Shalal announced his defection in a video posted on YouTube
The commander of Syria's military police has defected from President Bashar al-Assad's government and reportedly fled to Turkey. Lt Gen Abulaziz al-Shalal is one of the highest-ranking officials to join the uprising against the Syrian regime. The army had failed to protect Syrians and turned into "gangs of murder", the general said in a video statement. The announcement came amid reports of a deadly government strike in the northern province of Raqqa.

After reportedly crossing the border into Turkey, Gen Shalal released a statement saying he had defected because the military had perpetrated massacres in towns and villages instead of protecting Syrians. "I declare my defection from the army because of its deviation from its fundamental mission to protect the nation and transformation into gangs of murder and destruction," he said in a video message posted online. Opposition sources said the commander had been secretly co-operating with the rebels from the outset, the BBC's Middle East correspondent Jim Muir reports. This is believed to be the case with many other senior defectors, our correspondent adds.

But Gen Shalal said defecting was becoming more difficult because of the increased level of surveillance "Definitely, there are other high-ranking officers who want to defect but the situation is not suitable for them to declare defection," he said. An unnamed Syrian security source confirmed the army chief's defection but played down its significance, Reuters news agency reports.

Gen Shalal was due to retire soon and joined the uprising to "play hero", the source is quoted as saying. The US state department said it was not "in a position to confirm his actions or whereabouts". "If true, this would be yet another sign of the regime crumbling from within, as those around Assad realise that the end of his rule is inevitable," spokesman Patrick Ventrell said. "We continue to encourage regime officials and forces to reject the horrific actions of the Assad regime. Syrian officials should stand with the Syrian people."

Syrian death toll has passed 45,000: watchdog
Fri, Dec 28, 2012 - ‘FLURRY’ OF DIPLOMACY: Figures relased by a rights group point to an escalation of the conflict, as the UN’s peace envoy is ‘stonewalled’ by Damascus, a diplomat said
The death toll in Syria’s civil war has passed 45,000, a watchdog said on Wednesday, as UN peace envoy Lakhdar Brahimi looked to Russia for help in his faltering bid to find a negotiated settlement. “In all we have documented the deaths of 45,048 people,” Rami Abdel Rahman, director of the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, told reporters. More than 1,000 people had been killed in the past week alone, he added.

The Observatory relies on a network of medics and activists on the ground. It said the real number of those killed since an uprising against Syrian President Bashar al-Assad erupted in March last year could run as high as 100,000, with both sides concealing many of their casualties. The grim statistics added gravity to a UN warning that the humanitarian situation is rapidly deteriorating. The UN High Commissioner for Refugees “estimates that if fighting in Syria continues, the refugee figure could reach 1.1 million by June 2013,” a report said.

Brahimi arrived in Syria on Sunday to push a new initiative aimed at ending the bloodshed and getting the regime and opposition to the negotiating table. However, a UN Security Council diplomat said the veteran Algerian diplomat had received no support from any of the warring parties. “Al-Assad appears to have stonewalled Brahimi again, the UN Security Council is not even close to showing the envoy the kind of support he needs and the rebels will not now compromise,” the diplomat said on condition of anonymity.

Opposition activists also attacked Brahimi. “Brahimi’s arrival in Damascus to discuss a new political initiative to solve the crisis caused by the regime ... has not put a stop ... to massacres,” said the Local Coordination Committees, a grassroots network of anti-regime activists. Yesterday, a Syrian government delegation led by Syrian Deputy Foreign Minister Faisal Muqdad held talks at the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs as Moscow denied the existence of a joint plan with the US to end the crisis. Muqdad held talks in the morning at the ministry in Moscow, ministry spokesman Alexander Lukashevich said, adding that the results would be announced later in the day.

They were probably just spraying for cocroaches.

Im not exactly unhappy that he isn't doing anything right now. We shouldn't be involved in the Syrian civil war.

Syria usin' missiles made in Iran...
U.S. officials: Syria using more accurate Iranian-made missiles
December 28th, 2012 - The Syrian regime this week fired at least two Iranian-made, short-range ballistic missiles in what appears to be an effort to more precisely target Syrian rebels, two U.S. military officials tell CNN.
The Fateh A-110 missiles are more accurate than the older Scud variants that Syrian government forces have used in recent weeks. The U.S. military officials declined to be identified because of the sensitive nature of the information. The Iranian government has not commented on the issue. The Fateh trades range for accuracy. It can travel about 125 miles, while the Scud can go about 185 miles. But the Fateh has a "circular error probable" or - CEP - of 330 feet, while the Scud's CEP is 1,480 feet. CEP is defined as the radius of a circle in which half of a missile's lethal payload falls and is the standard measure of a missile's accuracy.

The firings did not reach near Syria's Turkish border. But the regime's use of ballistic missiles is the reason NATO is planning to send U.S., German and Dutch Patriot missile batteries to Turkish military installations: to protect the southern regions of that NATO ally. All six Patriot batteries are expected to be in place by the end of January. A NATO official could not confirm the use of short-range ballistic missiles this week, but NATO did detect the launch of such missiles inside Syria on a few December days, more recently on the 22nd.

"The fact that Scud-type missiles were used in Syria emphasizes the need for effective defense protection of our ally Turkey," the NATO official said. "This is why, earlier this month, NATO allies decided to deploy Patriot missiles in Turkey to augment Turkey's air defenses. The deployment, which will start within weeks, is defensive only. Its aim is to deter any threats to and defend and protect the population and territory of Turkey." U.S. officials say they believe the Syrians are firing ballistic missiles to preserve their aircraft, some of which have been shot down by rebels.
