So I want to join the US Army Engineering Corps

Actually, you'd probably be better off joining the Navy and becoming a SeaBee.

Either that, or, depending on the kind of engineering you are interested in, either become something in the Fireman apprenticeship (you can learn how to do all sorts of things from plumbing to welding, to learning about ventilation systems).

But.................if you're truly interested in weapons development and have the brains to back it up, something in the Missile Tech, Weapons Specialist or Gunner's Mate branches might be up your alley.

Why do I say this? Because camping as a hobby is fun to do, but camping as a way of life leaves much to be desired.

At least...............in the Navy you can take your house with you and still have hot water and ice cream.

The only downside? If your ship gets hit, it may sink.

I was thinking of this particular job:
Field Artillery Automated Tactical Data System Specialist 13D goarmy.com

I want a job that actually puts me in combat that also allows me to work my way into engineering and designing weaponry.

Any current serving or veterans from the Army have advice?
Well, first, it's already been pointed out that it's the U.S. Corps of Engineers.
But also, and I'm surprised nobody has mentioned this....13D isn't in the Corps of Engineers, it's Field Artillery.

For your ultimate goals..there is nothing in the military that would help lead to designing weaponry.

For combat, either 12B Combat Engineer, or go Navy and become a SeaBee.

Like to think the people designing weapons systems have college degrees and aren't enlisted people (other than as the ones doing the heavy lifting for the guys with glasses.) If you want to be an engineer you have to go to engineering school.

Your MOS sounds like a glorifed description of the guy who punches in coodinates for indirect fire. Not any kind of engineer or designer. If you're not fond of your ability to hear go for it. :) Probably be lugging shells and typing things in to a ground computer while slowly, or not so slowly suffering massive hearing damage.

Correct. If you want to learn construction, demolitions, or specific skills like carpenter, machinist, electrician, heavy equipment operator etc, then the military is a great place to go....paid training for skilled work that can be applied to the civilian world.

But if you want engineering design and not the practical skills, join the military for anything you want that sounds interesting. I suggest actually stay away from engineering and go into something you find interesting but has no civilian equivalent, or some other skilled field such as medical, intelligence, communications, logistics. That way you'll get to do something you normally wouldn't, or learn another skill you can apply that you might enjoy instead of engineering. But after you finish your term, use the G.I. Bill to get your engineering degree.

Well, he wouldn't be lugging shells, but sitting at a computer inputting coordinates and running systems checks. 13 series is Field artillery. 12 series is engineering.

Worth pointing out too what he'll get in basic: it's impossible to conduct a war without killing non-combatants from time to time. Especially if lobbing high explosive shells downrange you're going to be killing women and children fairly regularly. If that's not something you can spend the rest of life having nightmares about, do another job. Or better yet, join the Coast Guard and actually save lives instead of taking them.

Get yourself a degree in engineering and go the officer route.

You'll have a lot less shit to eat that way.

As a former gun bunny friend of mine would say "Artillery shells are all addressed 'to current occupant.'"

go to college get excellent grades in engineering and mathmatics

by that time you may have changed your mind to wanting to design

more peaceful things

I'm currently hold my BA in mathematics, but I was I was wondering if there was a more hands/combat oriented method of studying engineering with the military, so after my four/six/eight/twelve years, I could join weapons development.

Weapons are not designed by field artillery techs, weapons are designed by Engineers with years of advanced study and experience. If you want to design weapons, go to college and get a job at a defense contractor. If you want combat, join the infantry. A field artillery tech sits in the rear at a desk. Honorable service, but not combat.

US Armed Forces exist for the sole purpose of killing other human beings. Th ereaosn they can do that as fellow human beings is they convince themselves it's ok because our government says it is. But so'd the enemy's government about killing us. When you think about that a bit you realize what a load of shit it really is. It's not ok to kill other people regardless of the reason. But sometimes it is in fact necessary, and someone has to do it.

Unfortunately, the US isn't using the military properly or honorably of late. We're using it as a business tool, not a homeland defense tool. Should ask combat veterans to explain how they feel about what they were fighting for and about. Will hear the reality and not the recruitment pitches. I'm not anti-military so much as anti-deception.

You wont be fighting for American civilans back home. You wont be protecting them. You'll be killing people for oil and resources. If you're ok with that go ahead. Just don't have any illusions about it. Suicide rate for combat veterans is high enough.
