Massive Blizzard Pounds Eastern US 27 Dec 10 -
Strands millions of travelers
A powerful blizzard across the US northeast has buried the region beneath one to two feet (30-60 cm) of snow and sent temperatures plummeting.
The monster storm forced cancellation of some 2,000 flights, stranding millions of travelers.
In the New York area, John F. Kennedy International Airport, La Guardia Airport and Newark International in New Jersey were all closed Sunday and overnight.
Meanwhile, light to moderate snow blanketed many parts of Alabama, Mississippi, and North Carolina, a very rare Christmas occurrence. In fact, Atlanta, Georgia enjoyed its first white Christmas in 128 years.
The storm is expected to hit Nova Scotia later today.

The storm is no joke. Travel in parts of the coastal mid-Atlantic and much New England will become difficult to impossible as the storm slides northward, intensifying into Monday.

3 meters of snow in 3 days 25 Dec 10 -
Record snowfall at Vancouver Island resort
Mount Washington ski resort "has been pummelled with three metres of fresh snow in the past three days, burying lodges, cars and even ski lifts," says this article on the Canadian Press.
Brent Curtain, a spokesman for the popular Vancouver Island ski resort, says in the past one-and-a-half months the resort has already gone halfway toward breaking its all-time record of 18.5 metres of snow -- which took five months to build up in the winter of 1998-1999.
And if I recall correctly, that set a new record at the time.

Las Vegas sets record for coldest New Year’s Eve high temperature
lasvegassun.com ^ | Dec. 31, 2010 | Kyle Hansen
It’s going to be a chilly start to 2011: 28 degrees in Las Vegas at midnight, if the National Weather Service’s prediction is correct.

Las Vegas set a record today with the coldest high temperature ever recorded in Las Vegas on New Year’s Eve: just 38 degrees. The temperature was well below the old record for the coldest high, 45 degrees set in 1975, the National Weather Service said.

The last time the high temperature reached only the 30s was during a snowstorm on Dec. 17, 2008, when the high was 39 degrees.

Overnight temperatures aren’t expected to reach record lows, but “we’re definitely going to be looking at very cold temperatures for an extended period,” weather service meteorologist Larry Jensen said.

At 5 p.m. Friday, Jensen said some parts of the valley already were close to freezing and would stay that way for most of the night.

Forecasters are predicting a low of 27 degrees early Saturday and a high of 41 during the afternoon. The record low for Jan. 1 is 21 degrees, set in 1954.

The average low temperature for New Year’s Day in Las Vegas is 36 degrees and the average high is 56 degrees, according to weather service records.
