~Smoking Banned Outdoors In NYC~

The thing that pisses me off the most is that even back when the smoking in bars and restaurants ban came into effect, Bloomberg grandfathered in a few "cigar bars", because he still smokes cigars.

I just moved from NY, right before this came into effect - to San Francisco, which has already had this law for a few years.

I'm firmly against nanny-state laws, think this is a pile of bullshit, etc etc.

But then again, I'm a pack-a-day smoker.

No longer just an indoor-ban, smoking in open spaces is now banned in New York City.

The indoor ban was one thing, but is this perhaps a little too far? The ban is designed to help curb exposure to secondhand smoke as well as reduce litter. Thoughts?

Here's a better article~

New York City outdoor smoking ban begins - CNN

For me...GOOD for NYC! I am very tired of running the gauntlet outside where people congregate to smoke.

Sitting in a bar...can i spit my drink on you? Are you allowed to drink in public?

Just asking?

2nd hand smoke makes me vomit and gives me a terrible migraine/

Know what I did? I went to no-smoking restaurants or places with no-smoking sections and good ventilation.

Never had trouble finding one.

It's San Francisco. It doesn't get "cold" here. 55 - 65 degrees, year round.

And there's no law against BBQing here, or fireplace fires.

I just read an interesting (but sad) article about Atlantic City. What's interesting to note is what is NOT mentioned in the article: the smoking ban.
A perfect storm of competition right on its doorstep in Pennsylvania, New York and Delaware, coupled with the recession, pummeled Atlantic City worse than any other casino market. In four years, a billion and a half dollars vanished, along with thousands of jobs and tourists. Pennsylvania, with its 10 casinos, is poised to knock Atlantic City into third place at some point next year.

How did things go so wrong so fast?

They posed the question, yet did not even explore the obvious. PA permits smoking.

So does Atlantic City - there are smoking areas in all the casinos.

Have you been there? There are designated tables hidden away somewhere, but there is no smoking in bars, clubs, restaurants, hotel rooms, valet parking area, or even outdoors on the Pier.

i think it's more likely the fact that AC has always been kinda seedy. maybe people are just going to areas they feel more comfortable in?

I'm from NY. It impresses me enough that there are any smoking areas in the casinos at all.

The smokers go to the Indian Casinos.

And Jillian - I am not suggesting that the smoking ban killed AC. There's plenty of blame to go around. But it's quite dishonest for a reporter to pose that question without mentioning the ban. Even if it accounts for only 10 percent of revenue (which I believe is more), that's a lot of money.

That might have a tiny bit to do with it, but IMO, Atlantic City is a cesspool. Old buildings, low-rent crowds, just plain not nice. They need to raze the place and start afresh.

THAT was suppose to happen when casino gambling for Atlantic city passed....it's been 30 plus years with no improvement to the slums....as was promised back then when it was up for a vote....

Smokers never seemed to care about my inconvenience

We spent a hundred years breathing their air.....let them breathe ours for a while

There are stadiums that have been built on the backs of smokers and drinkers of this city. And YET one cannot light up a cigarette in the stadium, but they CAN drink like fools and get in their cars and drive home or kill or maim someone on their way to the next drink.... :cuckoo:

AND, I might add that, the monies allocated for paying for these stadiums have been deemed "Sin Taxes" :eusa_eh: Typical leftists would not know the definition of the word hypocrite if it bit them in the butt.

Ummm, I don't know where you live but I'm pretty certain that drunk driving is illegal.

One can just as easily light up a cigarette in the stadium as they can get behind the wheel after getting shitfaced. And in both cases one assumes the risks.
