I couldn't tell for the rocks whether the bird chose ones that displaced the greatest volume of water and in doing so used the smallest quantity of them (thus its own energy) needed to most expeditiously raise the water level. The "solid v. hollow" scenario indicates it clearly is capable of performing that sort of analysis when the differences in mass are great. I wonder how refined be the crow's abilities in that regard.
