Clearly we need all these functions of government. Also clearly there is waste in government. What we need are realistic proposals for streamlining and efficiency, not braindead demands for the elimination of government.

When a business has a huge shortfall in revenue, it cuts costs. When government has a huge shortfall, it borrows or increases taxes. The idea that we cannot reduce goverenment spending is hogwash.

Privatizing the Post Office would be preferable to eliminating it, in my opinion.

As to what I'd cut, I'd start with the Department of Homeland Security, the Department of Education, the Department of Agriculture, the IRS, and the Federal Reserve.

Which "small government conservatives" have ever suggested anything of the sort? I'd like to see who they are.

There's a LOT of fat that can be trimmed out of those agencies, and some agencies that can obviously be merged with others without destroying any one in its entirety.

Why are the National Weather Service and National Hurricane service separate entities?

Why are the EPA, National Parks and US Geological Survey?

The Federal Deposit Guaranty Corporation, US Pension Guaranty Corporation, Social Security Administration?

The FDA, Department of Agriculture, and National Institute of Health?

A little bit of consolidation and deletion of redundancy would work out rather well.

The Dept of Homeland Security can go.

Then let's start on REALLY genius stuff like investigating steroids in baseball.
