Last week the Supreme Court let stand the Justice Department's right to secretly arrest noncitizen residents.

Combined with the government's power to designate foreign prisoners of war as "enemy combatants" in order to ignore international treaties regulating their incarceration, and their power to indefinitely detain U.S. citizens without charge or access to an attorney, the United States is looking more and more like a police state.

Since the Sept. 11 attacks, the Justice Department has asked for, and largely received, additional powers that allow it to perform an unprecedented amount of surveillance of American citizens and visitors. The USA Patriot Act, passed in haste after Sept. 11, started the ball rolling.

In December, a provision slipped into an appropriations bill allowing the FBI to obtain personal financial information from banks, insurance companies, travel agencies, real estate agents, stockbrokers, the U.S. Postal Service, jewelry stores, casinos and car dealerships without a warrant--because they're all construed as financial institutions. Starting this year, the U.S. government is photographing and fingerprinting foreign visitors coming into this country from all but 27 other countries.</blockquote>

With the passage of the grossly mis-named USA PATRIOT Act, the foundation for an American police state was laid. It is being added to surreptitiously...one stone at a time. If Dubbyuh's administration gets another term in office in 2004(<i>Barring another attack on US soil, in which case Dubbyuh will suspend the Constitution and declare himself "President for Life"</i>), the edifice of the police state will be complete.

And what kind of attitude would that be now boyyo?

Oh, and I don't hate The US...I simply hate what I see being done to it by politicians on both sides of the aisle.

The Patriot Act is a long time coming. It should have been enacted decades ago. The fact of the matter is that all laws in this country infringe on someone's rights. It's about damn time the criminals and assholes are the ones infringed upon rather than the law abiding citizen of the this country!

Gun control
Seat belt laws
Welfare
Taxes
Parole
Appeals
Driver's Licenses

All just an example about how the rights of the accused and the stupid have more protection than those of us who've never committed crimes yet pay stiffer penalties than those who do.

P.S. Hey, Evil....welcome to the fight. We need people on our side!

Which side do you reside on? If you dont reside on either side, keep your mouth shut and quit pasting articles and post some original thought's on your distaste's!

That's what kind of attitude "BOYYO":read:

Well, ya know, I try to find the middle way, maintain balance, but Dubbyuh has so skewed the balance against you and me and everyone else that works for a living that you have to be deaf and blind not to notice it. I would suggest that you broaden your sources of information beyond FOX News and your hometown news paper. Try the BBC website, ASIA Times among others. :read:

Good.

Laughable statement. And approximately how many "noncitizen residents" and "enemy combatants" do we have imprisoned compared to the number of say, "non-violent drug offenders"? And I'm supposed to be worried about people firing at our soldiers and suspicious noncitizens in our country? Excuse me if I'm not too interested in their rights with respect to our laws and our safety.

Since the Sept. 11 attacks, the Justice Department has asked for, and largely received, additional powers that allow it to perform an unprecedented amount of surveillance of American citizens and visitors.

Good.

With the passage of the grossly mis-named USA PATRIOT Act, the foundation for an American police state was laid.

The war on drugs created more of a police state than the Patriot Act ever will. Fear of the Patriot Act is a ridiculously inflated election year propaganda tool.

If Dubbyuh's administration gets another term in office in 2004the edifice of the police state will be complete.

I doubt it. The President's emphasis on working proactively to eliminate the problem helps to ensure that less, not more, or our freedoms are abrogated. If you're worried about freedom at home I think you're pointing your finger in the wrong direction. Though the democrats disapprove of it, that is surely because they hate the President. A democrat in office at the time would undoubtedly have legislated a much more sweeping elimination of personal freedom post 9/11 than the relatively benign Patriot Act.

Barring another attack on US soil, in which case Dubbyuh will suspend the Constitution and declare himself "President for Life"

Not if he doesn't want to get shot he won't.

Bully I think you have been hitting up the Nitrous Oxide too often!

:) Good answer.

Where do people come up with some of this outlandish crap? They make it seem like people are being thrown in jail left and right and people have hardly any rights.

"Oh, and I don't hate The US...I simply hate what I see being done to it by politicians on both sides of the aisle."

Me too. This country used to be peaceful and free. Now it's headed for third-world squalor thanks to the Republican plan to let in all the illegals and fight all Israel's wars. The only difference between them and the Demorats is that they put a little more emphasis on the illegals and a little less on Israel. Other than than, it's the same traitor crap.

America first!

Used to be peaceful and free????????? Are you shitting me? Did you know that the cow towns of the 1800's had murder rates higher than modern day NYC or L.A. and that the murderers were almost exclusively committed by white men? Man you really are an idiot.

How about early NYC ran by Tamany Hall and its wink at enforcing the law. Really blind statements are revealing the mental midget that you really are.

"the cow towns of the 1800's had murder rates higher than modern day NYC or L.A."

Ahem. There was something in between. It was called 150 years of peace.

I'd take my chances in the cowtown over browntown anyday. Browntown, you're guaranteed to get insulted or shot with no warning. Even a whizzing bullet from a gang shootout. In cowtown, the guy would say ready set draw.

NOOOO there was no crime committed by anybody in the intervening 150 years, it was completely peaceful except for the good work lynchings of the KKK and the mafia warfare but wait, thats just Blacks and then Italians killing each other, hah they don't count. Loosen the swastika arm band I think its cutting blood supply.

You have two choices on where you can walk unarmed.

New York City in 1955, or New York City in 2004.

Newark in 1962, or Newark in 2004.

Washington, D.C. in 1950, or Washington, D.C. in 2004.

Miami in 1968, or Miami in 2004.

Pick one of the two.

All of em 2004 and not a damn thing will happen, in fact already done 3 out of the 4 and still standing without a scratch on my head. And by the way I guarantee you I own more arms than most here, just don't feel the need to carry them on my person.
