Skepticism widespread in Mideast over new peace talks

To make Obama look good.
The Palestinians have no ability to deliver on any promises. Why would anyone negotiate with them?

You have a point there, Rabbi. Obama insists on negotiating with Abbas and not with the government.

Abbas can make any agreement he wants but it would be non binding on the Palestinian people.

So, what is the point?

Obama and the Democrats desperately need something to distract voters from the state of their economy.

"Imagine the reaction at the White House when the Department of Labor released its weekly unemployment figures on Thursday. Jobless claims rose by 12,000 to 500,000 in the second week of August. There's been no improvement in the jobs market in 9 months and now unemployment is edging upwards again. This wasn't supposed to happen. The Obama administration had bet everything that the economy had turned the corner and would gradually get better. Many economists saw less than a 10 per cent chance that the economy would tip back into recession. After all, double dip recessions are "extremely rare". Now more people are losing their jobs and Team Obama is caught in the headlights. There is no back-up plan, no Plan B. The Democrats will face the midterms with no stimulus to create new jobs and with an economy that is steadily deteriorating. It's going to be a massacre and they know it."

The author of that quote, Mike Whitney, has been right more often than wrong with his economic predictions including the popping of the housing/credit bubble.

He pulls together different Economic opinions from across the political spectrum, then fashions those views into articles virtually everyone can comprehend.

This latest "Peace Proposal" is pure political theater; however, if it doesn't succeed in distracting voter attention, bombing Iran sure as hell would.

Mike Whitney: The Economy is in Big Trouble

The whole "peace process" is nothing but political theatre. The US and Israel have NO intention of finding a just peace in the region. Zero, Zip, Nada.

The solution is simple. Enforce international law and UN resolutions. Mission accomplished.

The US and Israel are both opposed to such a bizarre solution.

The whole peace process is nothing but political theater. The Palestinians have neither intention nor ability to conclude a meaningful enforceable treaty.
Let Israel do what is necessary for its own security--like every other state in the world-- and the rest will take care of itself.
Simple solution.

I don't see the "Palestinians" concluding a treaty when we only negotiate with western puppets. We refuse to talk to the elected government.

Israel has been winning the war with Palestinians for over 60 years. How long will it take for one of the worlds strongest armies to beat down the civilians in Palestine?

And let's not forget that Iran is constantly stirring the pot, and will do whatever it can to disrupt a possible peace.

It is well known that Iran supports the Palestinians but I have not seen where it has influenced their policies.

By "elected government" you mean Hamas, which has sworn to annhilate Israel? How do you negotiate with someone sworn to your annihilation?

Israel has suffered years of terrorist attacks and bombings and was able to tamp that down only through action that won it condemnation. How much more of that would you like?

Saying that it is a Hamas government is misleading. Hamas is the majority but the government includes Fatah, smaller parties, and independents. It has men and women, Muslims and Christians, and peace activists. It is not like Hamas is running the whole show.

Israel is dedicated to the destruction of Palestine, so everyone would be starting on the same page in negotiations.

Israel is in the uncomfortable position of having to attack civilians to stay in power. This attack on civilians brings more opposition and more attacks on civilians. Israel is on this downward spiral.

That is of course untrue. Please post where Israel says it is dedicated to the destruction of "Palestine", a place that does not exist.
They do not attack civilians. They attack combatants who wear civilian clothes and hide themselves in civilian areas.
Palestinians, however, intentionally blow up women and children on busses, and lob rockets into populated areas, even though there are plenty of military installations they could attack.
This is what makes them terrorists. And why Israel should affirm its policy never to negotiate with terrorists.

Is it the Arabs who never miss a chance to miss a chance for peace?

Is it the US and Israel who have obstructed every Arab peace initiative since January of 1976?

Given the billions of dollars in war profits being shared by rich Jews, Christians, and Muslims stemming directly and indirectly from Israel's occupation of Palestine, the Biggest Lies probably belong to the Biggest Killers.

There's no bigger killer in Palestine than Israel, and there's no bigger killer on the planet than the US.

Smedley Butler saw the solution almost 80 years ago.

Tax war profits into extinction.

Why are they called Palestinians if they are not from Palestine.

It has always been the Zionists stated goal of taking all of Palestine without the Palestinians. And they have proceeded to do just that. You can't deny it. It is in their history.

Iran and the Organization of Islamic States along with Hamas support the two-state solution first proposed at the UN Security Council by the major Arab states 34 years ago.

In January of 1976 Arabs offered a Security Council Resolution that would have created two viable states "...along the internationally recognized (pre-June 1967) borders -- with 'minor and mutual modifications..."

"Israel refused to attend the session.

"The US vetoed the resolution, and did so again in 1980."

A Middle East Peace...

Israel is not dedicated to the destruction of Palestine. Where do you get idea's like that????? That is absurd.

Please quote any official Israeli government policy to that effect.

Israel's most recent conquest and destruction of Palestine began in 1948 with the Nakbah.

I'm sure many of the hundreds of thousands of Palestinians who were expelled or fled their homes during the '48 Arab-Israeli War and the Civil War that preceded it thought it "absurd" to question Israel's dedication to destruction.

1948. Hmmmm....

The People are still there.

I personally like the concept of an Independent Palestinian State. That brings accountability and responsibility, and commitment, on all sides. Get it??? Good???

It's been a long wait.
