(CNN) -- Authorities are looking for six U.S. citizens missing since their small plane crashed Sunday off the north coast of Puerto Rico.

The U.S. Coast Guard found debris that might belong to the downed single-engine Cessna 206 half a nautical mile from the shoreline of the city of Quebradillas.

But despite five searches Sunday and two others throughout the night, rescue crews have not been able to find the pilot or the five passengers on the plane, the Coast Guard said Monday.

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico – A single-engine plane carrying six people crashed into the Atlantic Ocean off the north coast of Puerto Rico, the U.S. Coast Guard said Monday.

Authorities located a debris field off the northwestern city of Quebradillas, and helicopters and boats have been searching for survivors, Coast Guard spokesman Ricardo Castrodad said.

The missing pilot and all five passengers are U.S. citizens, Castrodad said.

Witnesses reported seeing an explosion on the plane before it crashed around nightfall Sunday about a half-mile (a kilometer) offshore, police spokeswoman Jessica Cardona said.

The Cessna 206, chartered by Tropical Aviation Corp., was traveling from the Casa de Campo International Airport in the Dominican Republic to San Juan, according to a Coast Guard news release.
