To be fair I think she means the Catholic Church in the US.
Which hides it's profits in off shore accounts in the Vatican Bank.

This is great. Villify the churches, and punish people for belonging to them.

The US is crumbling before our eyes. Freedom of religion and the protection of those who want to practice that religion, and a complete governmental hands-off policy is what keeps Americans free, you fucking idiots.

And it's LIBERALS who go for the fucking sin taxes. You don't see the baptist tobacco farmers of the carolinas or the methodist distillery workers voting to tax fucking cigarettes and liquor. It's the LIBERALS who are doing their best to shut down all industry in this country, and place it in the hands of the government...while at the same time getting rid of anyone who dissents. Which are, incidentally, Christians...the same people who have always complained at the removal of freedom and individuality, or state mandated religion (or state-mandated removal of religion).

BTW, they're removing guns from households in Houston now.

who just signed the tobacco bill? That couldn't have helped.

Would you mind taking a Breathalyzer, Babs?

Ahhhhh! Just as I thought, blood alcohol count dangerously low.

That's a matter of opinion.

In my second job, I work with disable people. And right now I can name off at least a dozen churches I work with to help find services for the people I work with.

we are not just talking booze....

Where I live sin taxes are taxes upon booze.

and i dont agree with you on chruches doing a lot of charity work....

Well I work with churches that do a lot of charity work, hiring disabled people, giving out food, helping with rent and utilities, doing volunteer work, organizing fundraising, and helping out with prescriptions. Just because I'm an Atheist doesn't mean I'm going to be a fundie about it and deny what I see with my own eyes.

....i see a few doing that...not the majority..

And you would know this how exactly ?

The few that don't, simly can't. You must think churches are raking in money hand over fist. The majority struggle maintaining their church and paying the bills.

unless you are counting money going overseas etc...

If they want to do that, what concern is it of yours ?

mega churches are esp. offensive..

Why because they're successful ? That's due to hard work, charismatic leaders and luck.

and what about faith healers like benny hinn?

I could careless, it isn't my place to judge their religious beliefs. I don't get the Atheists who act like fundie Christians. To me it's hypocritical as hell. It effects me in no way whatsoever, so why should I care ?

do you disagree that churches are full of sinners?

Well according to Christian beliefs, everyone is a sinner.

perhaps a tax on adultery...the list goes on and on...fat women in spandex is a sin

How about a tax on arrogant and ignorant Atheists ? Or a tax on Atheists who have sand in their vagina ? Or a tax on Atheists who're bitter and angry ?

Churches are not taxed because they are a nonprofit or not for profit, such as Salvation Army, the American Red Cross, The United Way, Good Will....

If there are no profits, there is no tax to be rendered....no?

Or am i misunderstanding such?

in addition to this...the FIRST AMENDMENT!!!

Congress shall make no law regarding an established church.....i'd bet that would include legislating taxes simply against them....

right now they are tax exempt because they fall under a nonprofit, not because there is a law specifically giving them this benefit alone...is my understanding.

Exactly, churches rely upon donations aka tithes. Most are usually running in the red, and the lucky ones who have the ability to pay their bills and have some leftover, donate it someway to charity.

Best news I've heard in a while!

lol The angry and bitter Atheists are out in force in this thread. And they're just as bad as their fundie cousins.

Just take away their tax exempt status. This would mainly benefit the cities and states they reside in...they pay NO taxes on items purchased.

Why take away their tax exempt status ? Because you're an Atheist ? And it wouldn't benefit anyone, they provide vital social services to the communities they're in.

The thing about non profits is that while they may not bring in profits to the organization, they can be extremely profitable for members and employees.

Well, most nonprofits need paid employees for it to run. The nonprofit I work parttime for has about 10 paid employees. From the director down to the janitor.

The mega churches should definately be taxed

I don't think so, the mega churches also invest in their communities, have employees, provide social services, fund other non profits, fund food banks and other similar enterprises.

I don't know that there is anyway to do that and exclude the small, humble and meager churches but the mega churches with private stadiums and gymnasiums, sure. That's profit.

How is that profit ? rofl

but churches usually do a lot for the community.

Don't tell that to the Atheists and liberals.

say eliminate the tax-exempt status period.

As long as charitable / non-profit organizations do what they claim to do, they won't have any income left over to tax anyway. Right?

Someone doesn't understand how taxes work.

the vatican is one of the richest churches and all..land holdings etc...why arent they paying taxes...

The Vatican isn't in the US, there goes that statement. And most Catholic Dioceses in the US are running in the red. Not too mention the huge amount of charity work the Catholic Church does in the States.

i live within a mile of 2 churches....neither of them have done a damn thing for me....one just laid out

Why the fuck are you entitled to anything ? Obviously you're not doing that bad, sitting on your computer and with your internet connection.

one just laid out
14 k for stained glass windows....who did that help? in the community? but yet they dont pay taxes on it....

Why the fuck shoudl they pay taxes on it moron ? God you just get dumber and dumber. You do know that they probably did a huge amount of fundraising for those windows right ? Or that private or public donors donated money? Fucking idiot. God you make us intelligent Atheist feel really embaressed.

Too many churches act like businesses.

In a way you have to have a businesslike mind to run a church.

Not all of what they do is good for the community

How so ?

Hello? Raping altar boys, encouraging blowing up Americans.

Hmmm, let's see here. Raping altar boys ? That's a tiny minority of sick freaks. Encouraging blowing up Americans ? WTF Are you talking about ?

To be fair I think she means the Catholic Church in the US.
Which hides it's profits in off shore accounts in the Vatican Bank.

Yeah, that's why so many Dioceses are going broke and shutting down churches?

Wow this got a bit out of hand. I think this all becomes a bit more simple. You see taxes on Cigs, Booze, porn etc are just like sales taxes. If you don't purchase the product, you don't have to pay the tax. Cigs and Booze can be harmful over time and thus are worth making harder to get (as we all pay when someone drives drunk and kills someone or when out health insurance goes up because grandma has a hole in her neck and an oxygen tank) Porn is a stupid tax but thats another argument for another time.

Religion on the other hand, is something you can't choose. Or at least most people can't choose. Its also been pointed out that churches aren't the only groups that get non-profit status and so its not an issue of church and state. If I really wanted to, I bet I could start a non-profit Atheist learning center. It would be pretty boring after the first week, but I could do it legally.

Anyway, my point is you choose to opt in to so called "sin taxes." That's why they are reasonable targets for tax hikes. Maybe instead we should just add to the list. Chocolate tax maybe? Tax for pay-per-view wrestling. :)
