Sick Of It All!!!

Call this a rant if you will but I’ve got to say something about where the
game industry is going. Is it just me, or does the new game systems not excite
you very much. Hell I’m still happy with my Xbox and PS2. IMO the game
console industry has gone to shit. They haven’t even come close to
developing games that utilize the old systems max capabilities. Could they
make better games on the new consoles, sure but how much better will they
get before a new console comes out? The console Nazis don’t care to
keep the old systems around. If it’s not broke, don’t fix it. I know that the
PlayStation was due for an upgrade but does Microsoft really have anything
to offer by countering with ANOTHER console?

I know, I know it’s all about the Benjamins. I think it would be wiser to
promote better games on the Xbox and wait a few years to see what the
flaws will be for the PS3. So many gamers I speak to feel the same way as I
do, but you still have a market and they WILL sell like hotcakes because
people are addicted to technology. A recent poll showed that only 8% of the
gaming population (polled of course) were excited about the 360.The other
72% were leaning towards the PS3. I don’t think I’ll buy either one just yet,
hell I can’t afford it. Can the console Nazis be swayed, probably not. It could
however happen if the system flops, it would have to either be to expensive
or it just wouldn’t gather any interest. Don’t think that'll happen soon.

So in a nutshell:
Games will be more expensive
Consoles will become faddish and outdated.
Game libraries will become smaller.
Developers will have minimal time to kick out quality games.
Developers will never truly maximize capabilities of ANY console.
Gamers will be left with empty pockets!!!

Hell, you might as well just buy a computer.
Just my take on the issue, let’s hear what you have to say.

I agree with you though. I like my X-Box a lot but find few games that keep my interest. Buying a new console when the one I have is still fairly new and not being used to its full potential seems pretty silly to me. I wont do it.

I agree with you 100%, Joker. I've had my PS2 for about three years now. I've got a grand total of... 8, maybe 9 games for it. It seems like as soon as they put out a system, rather than work out all the kinks and put out a quality game, they'd rather just move on to a new system, which sucks. I think it's just that we remember the original NES and the Genesis and Super Nintendo, which each stuck around for, what, ten years apiece? And all three of those systems had immense game catalogues, and soooooo many classic games. Sadly, most of today's gamers just don't remember that time. For someone raised on, I don't know, a Nintendo 64 or PS1, it's a normal thing for there to be a new system out every few years.

Bottom line is, the PS3 and XBOX360 are going to sell immensely, and the corporate heads are going to pat themselves on the back, because of course big numbers equals quality product.

Like I said, I think we're the last of a dying breed. Even all of my friends are all stoked for the new systems and plan on buying them the day they come out. They clearly don't remember how many bugs were in the very first XBoxes.

Sadly, I think the average 15, 16 year old would read this thread and see it the way we look at older people who say "video games are for kids." Maybe we're just getting older. :duh3:

This is one of the reasons I don't buy consoles. I'll stick to my computer. The thing that stuck me as incredibly evil about the Xbox 360 is the hard drive. No internal hard drive this time. You can get memory cards, but they're small. The hard drive is external. Now, an internal 20 MB hard drive for a computer will run you $40 max, and even an external will cost, at most, twice that much. The external hard drive for the 360 is $99.99. Now, the deluxe package, which costs an extra $100, comes with the hard drive...and a bunch of other crap I would never use, like a wireless controller (I hate batteries), an Xbox Live headset, and an Xbox Live subscription. Now, am I the only one who thinks listening to 12 year olds cuss me out because they suck isn't fun?

I've actually replaced alot of my game time with Disc Golf.

It's technology. It's advancing so fast the people who make games are able to design stuff that can't be run using current hardware, so you need new hardware, then you start to design games for the new hardware, and in so doing come up with ways to design a game that can't be run using the new hardware, so you need newer hardware. This will continue until they hit a technological wall, or until the market dries up. Neither is likely to happen anytime soon.

Computer games designed to be played for extended periods of time (MMO's with persistent worlds) are now designed to not even be run at their full capcity when they are released, but instead only able to run with all the features ramped all the way up once technology has finally caught up.

The game I'm playing now, if you turn the graphics setting to maximum, if gives you a warning that it's not even intended to be played that way. Once you click yes to proceed anyways, the graphics are absolutely phenomenal but your computer comes to a virtual standstill.

This is the hollywood mentality. If it makes money, do it, over and over and over and over and over.....

Think about it. What was the last game that had you so captivated that you couldnt leave the house for days? Halo 1 was the last one i can think of on the new consoles. Before that Metal Gear solid for the PS1 was the only other. The game industry has been taken over by the same masterminds that took over hollywood and made it into a production line of crap. Pump out the systems and more importantly the accessories. Pump out the number of games but don't worry about quality. Take something someone else did and tweak it alittle.

GTA 3 was a big innovation. Now how many games have come out that are labeled "its GTA but in space, or GTA but with cops, or GTA but with cows?" Same goes for any other successful game that has hit the market in the last 6 to 7 years.

Im afraid its only going to get worse on the grand scale but better games will be mixed in there. Games that are completely captivating and awesome will be made with newer technology but then they will be cloned and force-fed ad nauseum. But you'll still be able to keep the original game.

I really wish you were right about things getting good again, but I can't really see it happening, honestly. The difference between video games and say music or movies is that with music and movies, there are independent companies and artists putting out unique music or movies regardless of what's popular or what's making money at the moment.

However, with video games, you simply don't have that. It's all big corporations. The closest thing to an indie company would be Rockstar, I guess, and they have the unfortunate luck of being the ones that everyone rips off.

Nice, Joker! I wish I would've saved all my systems over the years. As it is now, I've just got a PS2, and my roommate has a Gamecube. I've got NES and Genesis emulators on my computer, but it's not the same.

I gave them Asteroids to go along with it. I sold all my old games online for far more than I thought they were worth.

I'm once again playing Tony Hawk 3, I honestly think that for me anyway, this has got to be the most replayable game ever.
