Wth the exception of children, all those you listed are required to file tax returns but either their incomes were too low, or they qualified for enough credits that they didn't have to pay federal income tax. So the fact remains that nearly 50 percent of Americans do not pay federal income tax.

I bet ya 50% of the country doesn't pay a dime in cigarette taxes either!

HOW DARE THEY! HOW UNFAIR!

:D

Surely you're not comparing cigarette tax to federal income tax.

why not? it goes to pay THE BILL? Why should people be singled out like that? they pay cigarette taxes to pay for the health care of the children of others? At least with the gas tax, the people paying it are getting something in return....roads to drive on...

TAXES ARE TAXES....to single out people who do not pay one small portion of the taxes we collect in this Nation, while not recognizing that they pay a hell of alot in taxes otherwise, is unjust....and class warfare.

you, (the general 'you'...those that always play pawn for the wealthy) happily take/steal the poor worker's social security taxes to pay for what income taxes should be paying....yet do not give recognition to this...

yet you, (the general you) only tax the wealthiest up to 100 grand of their millions earned with SS taxes while taxing the poorest among us on every dime they earn....

then you got excise taxes, cigarette taxes, liquor taxes, social security taxes, property taxes, corporaste taxes of which we all pay in the product's retail price, sales taxes, state income taxes, fees for every kind of licensing you can imagine, State lotteries, duties, estate taxes, medicare taxes, unemployment taxes-fees, etc etc etc....

to single out ONE TAX out of the MANY taxes that we all pay to support our government is fotter....imo.

Its interesting how most of the people on USMB think that other people should pick up the tab for the unforeseen costs of their own oil consumption. Why is that?

Its because these people value nothing except consumption and the almighty dollar. They are completely willing to sacrifice the livelihoods and culture of an entire region in their own country in order to get what they want ... and they expect to not have to pay for it .. because they are soulless, greedy, and once they have theirs, everyone else can be damned. People like this form the basis of the neoconservative/libertarian conservative movement, and I have a feeling they make their paleoconservative counterparts cringe.

Why bother with asking a question if you're just going to answer it yourself?:cuckoo:

And wrongly, I might add.

By all means, share you alternative explanation for the selfishness.

When I see selfishness I'll let you know. So far all I've seen is your incessant whining.

Are you serious with this link? MSNBC? The most biased pieces of shit on television.

But let get this straight, you're basing your argument on frets of what might happen?

"The Gulf oil spill that is contaminating the waters off the coast of Louisiana could have an economic ripple effect extending to Florida and beyond, even if the slick doesn't cause extensive damage in those states."

You stated as fact that "Many of them will lose their business", and to support your claim you come up with a biased link that worries about what "could" happen.

When businesses start closing down, get back to me.

how do business that rely on beaches do business if the beaches are covered in oil.

how do people shrimp and fish if the shrimp and fish are dead/contaminated?

you really this ignorant?

How many businesses have closed down due to the oil spill?

I'll tell you what next time we have a Cat 4 or Cat 5 hurricane in the Gulf, why don't you start donating money to those that may lose their homes.
I have very little money and prefer to do my part by volunteering my time and labor. But thanks for the suggestion.

On second thought why wait until a hurricane is in the Gulf, just start donating now before hurricane season even starts.

Its a great idea you've got, getting resources already in place to handle disasters as they occur. But this sort of thing, some people call it "planning ahead" - isn't something you just came up. There are already non-profs you can donate to for future natural disasters.

I have to say though, even though its not an original idea, with ideas as good as that, maybe I had you wrong.

Cigarette tax is a state revenue source, it's not comparable to federal income tax.

They shut down fishing and oyster harvesting in a few zones as a precautionary response, that's hardly the same as businesses closing down. But nice try.

That's not a very good explanation for why people don't want to pay the full price for their oil.

Who's not paying full price?

You have absolutely no concept or care for what happens outside of your own tiny world, do you?

I simply asked a question, if you can't answer it, just say you can't answer it. But you're the one that made the claim that "people don't want to pay the full price for their oil". I just wanted to know who these people were.

Tell that to the oyster harvesters that had to shut down.

Shut down? They can still harvest oysters, just not in the specified zones.

In the end we ALL must, in some way be responsible for this disaster, in one way or another. We have no choice, it's the only place we have to live, I don't see any other planets around within taxi distance.

We'll all pay for this cleanup in the end regardless, and I am sure those in the oil industry are burning the midnight oil , no pun intended, planning a 'financial recovery' at the expense of those that demand their product.

I'm convinced that S. Louisianna has been on the government dole since Katrina, and now that they're seeing that dry up, the Oil Slick is only the new excuse to be on the dole, rather than adapt.

Sorry guys, but you're gonna hafta be big boys now.

Who's not paying full price?

What he means is that it is't taxed enough as it is over in thier hero model States of the EU. After all? Isn't it the intent of Obama, The Statists in the Congress, and even the OP of this thread to make the United States more like their Socialist pals and then make us feel guilty that we aren't?

So lemme get this straight - our state gets drenched in oil so you can ride around in cars and airplanes - and its our problem, not yours?

You know, if you don't like living in a nation which takes care of its own when a disaster hits, there are many, many other countries you can choose to live in.

That isn't what he said at all. And as I said about YOU in another thread? Cut your electricity, sell your computers, buy a farm sans the luxury of Electricity, and leave the rest of us alone.

You're state is drenched in oil (which is pure hyperbole) because of a disaster, it has nothing to do with my Gulfstream or my Silverado. But please explain to me how parking my truck and keeping my plane in a hanger will help the oil drenched state of Louisiana?
