Should I Run For Local Office?

I'm hearing this more and more. My friends and people I know all seem to bring up this, "you should run for mayor" stuff. Like everyone is talking about me when I'm not around and they've all come to the conclusion that I'd make a good town Mayor. But my close friends go one step further and say start with town Mayor and then move on to state representative, Senator, Congressman.... you get the idea. I guess when I talk politics I'm quite compelling in getting my position across.

So I ask the people here that have known me for quite awhile... "do you think I should run for local office?"

If you think not, please try and say so in a decent manner.

Go for it.
What politics needs is a lot less politicians.
Better politicians than douchebags.

then how bad do you want it...you are gonna give up a lot of family time and be confronted with issues you wouldnt imagine go on....you know sometimes rider we think we know the town we live in....i thought i knew the little town i lived in till i worked the vampire shift on er admitting... it is amazing what goes on behind closed doors and one of the major reasons all medical workers clerical workers etc in a hosptial sign a privacy oath....so you may find things that turn your stomach going on....and trying to change them may make you a hated person....so i think the real question is...how bad do you want it...can you help the future of your community? lets be all dear abby about it...in one year...would your community be better off or worse off due to your leadership?

Well... so far my good friend just got elected Village Supervisor, and the Chief of Police is a good friend of mine. So I do have friends in positions of power already. And it's a dinky little town we're talking about here. The population is around 1,400. But could I deal with things I don't know about? Probably. Seeing as who's already been Mayor of this little berg, and I do know them, if they could handle it, so can I. Could make positive changes? I'm sure of it.

And I've lost around 12 pounds since that picture. That was "sit on your ass and do nothing because it's too damn cold outside winter" fat. I knew I'd lose it as soon as it got warm enough to be active.

Pale, what is the ethnic make up of your town? How about the religious make up? Is it more or less a town where everyone knows each other? Your town is smaller than just 2 classes of the high school in my town. (4,000 students Grades 9-12)

Does everyone know each others "business?"

you might be a bit shocked at the costs....just the printing costs...of course in a small town pressing the flesh and being a person of your word is best advertising possible....you have not address your being in a motor club and its as a variable.

I was a Vagos hang around and wore a supporter cut when I rolled with the club out in Nevada. I don't see anyone around here giving a hoot about that. Harley Davidson is a Wisconsin business, and people around these parts like bikers anyway, for the most part. The Outlaws have a rather seedy reputation around here though, but I haven't, WOULDN'T have anything to do with those guys.

Would someone please ban this mother fucking idiot from the thread?

You're going to have to do a little better if you're going to be dealing with other council members and the general public!

Sure, why not? It'd be a blast to have a USMB member as an elected official. You can regale us with stories about how dumb the public is. A friend of mine is a mayor of a city and I think he now regrets it because of ridiculous demands by a handful of people.

There is a difference?

Okay PR, (notice I didn't call you what I normally do, as I don't want to see you get your knickers in a twist 2 times in 2 pages), here's how I see it.........

Considering your political beliefs, which you have generously shared with the rest of the board, we know that you are a GOP type. And, based on the record of the last bunch of GOP'ers, currently, most people have a serious distaste for anything Republican, unless of course, your whole town is Republican.

I think your best bet would be to start off with a seat on the City council, and then work your way up from there. And, not only would you be able to network, you would also have a better idea of what to expect than if you went straight in for mayor.

Weren't YOU bitching last year about Obama's lack of experience? If you go straight in for the mayor's office, rather than starting out on city council, your opponent could say the same thing about you.

Again........notice..........no bad language, no insults.

You're welcome.

i am not trying to be a smart ass....they used a guy's driving record here...and this is a small town

I'd let them dig up whatever dirt they wanted. I'll readily admit to anything that's true. I don't really have anything in my past that I'd be afraid to answer for.

Yeah it's kind of like that.... "gossipy." And it's mostly white, three big churches in town, always packed on Sunday, mostly farmers and hard working, salt of the earth folks.

Both of those are excellent questions EZ, and the best one was asking about the religious make up of the town.

True fact........when I was traveling from country to country in the Navy, one thing that I found out is that you can tell pretty much all there is to know about a place by finding out what the dominant religion is there.

Same trick works here in the US as well. Compare Salt Lake City Utah to Las Angeles CA. The dominant religion in Salt Lake is Mormon, and in LA, it's a combination of Christianity and agnosticism.

Holy crap, "hard working, salt of the earth folks", I might need to move to your town when I retire.

Well a very good friend of mine just ran for Village Supervisor and won in a landslide against a guy that has had the job for 22 years. It was kind of unexpected, but clearly indicates that people around here are hungry for a change. They see the town business dwindling, empty buildings on the main drag, nothing really going to draw people into town as far as entertainment, and this town sits right on the Wisconsin River, which is a huge, beautiful river, and we don't seem to be cashing in on that. I have ideas... and I don't think a run for Mayor would cost much at all. I could no doubt cover the cost out of my own pocket.
all it takes is someone with a vision and the willingness to act on it
i am of Cherokee heritage and fell into an opportunity to advance the prospects to bring gambling to the Eastern Band of the Cherokee Indians. that single move has transformed the tribe from an impoverished community to one with a very positive future
exploiting the opportunities provided by your riverfront location - or some other community aspect - which provides a compelling competitive advantage, can be the needed ingredient to transform your own berg
it appears you already have an informal group to call on for support. appears it may be the time to hitch action to idea

Yes, thank you for being civil. I do appreciate it.

But I think people here might have the wrong impression of what this job is. We're talking about a tiny little hick town. 1,400 people. And the list of past Mayors reads more like a joke. Most wouldn't want the job if it was handed to them. I just think that I could make a difference here. I've been around these parts all my life, and I can remember MUCH better days when this little town was bustling. I don't know exactly why it seems as though the town is dying, but I'd be willing to bet that lack of leadership and someone that gives a damn is part of the reason. I'd like to change that.

And I'd run as a conservative, not a repub. At this point in my life I have disdain for just ALL politicians.

while our politics appear to be polar opposites, i encourage you to go out there and inflict yourself on the public
let them evaluate what you have to offer; and with 50% plus one of those voting, you can prevail
be prepared to lose going in but plan to win. if you have no political network, because you have not been politically active to date, recognize that may be a disadvantage ... especially in larger communities
and please be a statesman and not a politician. have a reason why you want a position of authority and what you intend to do with it ... and that this is not just a pursuit for power and prestige (if being a politician can actually be called prestigious)
good luck in your efforts! - offered WITHOUT sarcasm (which, for me, is quite rare)

Thank you for your reasonable response. The town I live in here is pretty small, but my relatives have been in this area since before there were even roads connecting the towns, so people know who I am. Mayor doesn't seem to be a position many people want. It really doesn't pay anything and can be just a head ache. But I see things in this town I think I could change, for the better. The Mayors we've had in the past weren't anything special. A bar owner, a gas station owner, an old man that died while Mayor.... and so on. I think if someone got the job and actually DID something, the town would benefit. I think I'd like to take a crack at it, and I'd bet I could get elected.

based on that satement you should run.....i was campaign manager for a childhood freind that was the youngest mayor ever elected in my hometown......elected office and campaigns are fun....

Well I'll be dipped... I also have Cherokee blood in me. My great grand mother was half Cherokee, and as many times as I've asked, no one knows who the full blooded Cherokee was that was her parent. There doesn't appear to be any record of it. I'd really like to know though.

But not only do we have a great river right on the edge of town, but there's more Indian effigies right here in this area than any where else in the world. A couple hundred years ago this place was thick with Indians. Heck my mom and dad can remember when there was still Indian encampments along the river when they were kids. Also the Ho Chunk Indian tribe has a large farm across the river and they raise buffalo. They give tours and have powwows that people can sit in on, but no one seems to be advertising ANY of that. I think we have draws that could bring in a lot of tourist money.
