COLUMBUS, Ohio - Democrat Sen. Sherrod Brown held onto his U.S. Senate seat by defeating Republican challenger Ohio Treasurer Josh Mandel.
Brown held a 55 to 41 percent lead as of 9:30 p.m.

The race between Brown and Mandel was one of the nastiest and most expensive waged in the country.

Polls showed Mandel was seven points behind Brown in September but closed the gap in the days leading up to the election.
