Sharia Law in Minnesota?

Will Minnesota give in to the Somali immigrants and allow them to refuse, as an employee to handle bacon as a cashier, or refuse any customer with objectional items as a cabbie such as alcohol, dogs (including guide dogs for the blind)?

Isn't there a difference between Sharia law and respecting one's religious beliefs?

There is a difference when someone signs up as a Cab Driver and then wants to ignore our handicap laws because his religion says so. Or if someone wants to be a cashier but will not check out groceries because they are religiously objectionable.

So, the outcome is between the employer, employee and U.S. law - not Sharia law. Right?

Yes but the problem starts when the Muslim goes to court and claims freedom of religion and forces the employer to accomodate. An example is a lady worked at Disney World and wanted to wear a head scarf while working as a Disney Character. It was not part of the costume and she went to court saying that she was unjustly fired because of religious belief.

Man, this old E-mail is still making the rounds . OK to set the record straight the cashiers were told , fine if you don't want to handle bacon we have other jobs open . The cabbies were told to take dogs and booze or find another line of work . hope this helps

Exactly, Jews have many of the same rules as Muslims do, as in dietary laws etc.
Sharia is hardly a threat to the US. We have a constitution.

Religious exemptions make me uncomfortable. Mostly they seem to apply to Christians, since most Americans are Christians (though most don't claim any particular exemption). It seems like sometimes but not always someone is allowed to do (or not do) something because of their religion that they would otherwise be unable to do. Men from nonviolent denominations have a major advantage in obtaining Conscientious Objector status. Christian student groups have achieved exceptions to anti-discrimination rules that allow them to ban gays from their groups.

On the other hand, there are religious rights that groups have requested but been denied. Polygamy is a practice that has been tied to religion, but is not legally recognized anywhere in the US. Given all this, it's not clear to me what rules are applied in recognizing religious exemptions.

In any event, the Fox News clip in the original post is ridiculous. It opens on the premise that "It [Minnesota] seems to be on its way to be America's first Somali-Muslim state". In fact the story mentions: Muslim cabbies don't want to have dogs or alcohol in their cabs, and Muslim Target employees don't want to stock bacon.

As the poster farmer notes, the cabbies were told they had to take dogs and alcohol, and the Target employees were not required to handle bacon. In both cases, employers decided whether it was reasonable to make accommodations for their employees. In neither case apparently did the Muslims even attempt to sue the company to permit their own religious observances. To me, a Sharia law state would be one in which bacon was banned, not one in which people were allowed to keep their jobs without touching bacon. Fox is way off on this one.
