Shades Of The 787 Billion Stimulus That Wasn't

The same way that they "save" public sector jobs. Why was it OK to give local governments taxpayer money to save the jobs of public sector jobs but not give businesses taxpayer money to save the jobs of private sector workers? What made one group of worker's jobs more valuable than others...especially when those "others" are the one's who paid the taxes in the first place?

Money was given to the private sector in terms of tax incentives for creating jobs

Yeah, in a down economy you tell a business owner that if he hires an employee that he doesn't need and can't afford to pay...that at the end of the year he'll get a tax credit on all of the profit that he hasn't made? Gee, wonder why THAT program didn't work?

No....you put the money where it is getting results

Conservatives want to give massive tax cuts to all corporations in the hopes it might create more jobs. Why have lower tax rates for corporations that are sending jobs overseas?

Give them their tax cuts AFTER they have created jobs, not before

I thought Obama admitted there weren't any shovel ready jobs?

I drove over hundreds of miles of roads that were being repaired with stimulus money a couple years ago,

so they must have been 'shovel ready'.

What's amusing about that statement, Carbineer...is that it was the failure of "shovel ready" jobs being ready that led the Obama Administration to panic and order the infrastructure funds to be spent on whatever could be done quickly. So instead of repairs to bridges...we got road repaving...LOTS and LOTS of road repaving. That was what you were witnessing as you drove those hundreds of miles.

President Obama is also willing to spend money on bridges, tunnels, infrastructure repairs

Guess who blocked the funds?

This from the guy who HAD the funds to spend on "bridges, tunnels, infratstructure repairs" and instead ordered that money be spent on road resurfacing because they were embarrassed that so little of the stimulus money allocated for "shovel ready" jobs was actually creating jobs? You want to give THAT guy more money to do what he couldn't do the first time? Come on, Winger...Obama wants more money for his slush fund and the GOP said no. If he'd done the right thing the first time instead of what he perceived as the politically expediant thing then those bridges and tunnels would be being worked on as we speak. But Barry didn't do the right thing...he did what he always does...what he thinks gives him a chance at a second term.

Malkin is a partisan hack.

The stimulus worked

Actually, TM...YOU'RE the partisan hack...Michelle Malkin is an investigative conservative journalist that points out "inconvenient" facts about Barry and friends.
Yeah......the "facts".

You have forgotten the purpose of the Stimulus

It was to provide an influx of money to prime the economic pump. Get money back into the economy quickly. Using the money for a tunnel project five years from now would not have helped the 2009 economy

But using it for that NOW when it didn't make sense before, somehow suddenly makes sense again? Go have your morning cup of coffee, Winger. You're not awake yet.

Maintaining and improving our infrastructure always makes sense

So then you're admitting that Barry panicked when he pulled the plug on his "shovel ready" jobs that in reality were far from ready and instead blew it on road resurfacing? And you now would like to spend additional billions doing what he should have done in the first place? Of course "now" those jobs aren't any closer to being shovel ready than they were three years ago...so any effect on unemployment won't be seen for some years down the road. Sorry, Winger...but would I be wrong in saying that the people running our country right now don't have a clue what they're doing?

You question whether I remember the "purpose" of the stimulus...and then you try and paint the Obama Administration's handling of infrastructure spending as something other than the SNAFU it was?

Different purposes......

The Stimulus was for the Government to make a cash infusion to our economy. Jobs were as shovel ready as possible....some more so than others. But what could you expect?

In terms of maintaining public infrastructure, it is not what Obama should have been doing but what all Presidents should have been doing. Pork loves new projects. Senator Earmark loves to point out the new bridge or tunnel that he got funded.......they may even name it after him

Nobody likes to push maintaining and repairing what we already have. No glory in that

Obama tried to get additional funding and associated jobs for infrastructure repair. It was a major part of his Jobs Bill

Republicans shot it down

And what exactly is the problem with repaving roads that need repaving?

I'm curious, Winger...why does a teacher, police officer or firefighter's job have more "value" than a person in the private sector who needs to work to put food on the table and keep a roof over his family's head? What gave this Administration the right to take "our" money and give it to the one group of people and not another?

How do you propose the government save private sector jobs?

The same way that they "save" public sector jobs. Why was it OK to give local governments taxpayer money to save the jobs of public sector jobs but not give businesses taxpayer money to save the jobs of private sector workers? What made one group of worker's jobs more valuable than others...especially when those "others" are the one's who paid the taxes in the first place?

1. Government workers don't pay taxes?

2. Private sector businesses don't work on infrastructure projects?

3. There was 51 billion in business tax credits in the stimulus.

4. Much of the 27 billion in 'green' energy investment went to private companies.

btw, the GOP alternative to Obama's 800 billion dollar stimulus was a 700 billion dollar stimulus that only differed in its percentage of tax cuts vs. spending.

The reason that roads were repaved was because it could be done quickly. The Obama Administration totally misjudged how long it would take to bid and contract out the more complex jobs such as bridge repairs. It's one more example of this group's total inability to run the country. Do we need bridge repair? Most certainly. So why then did we spend most of the infrastructure monies on road resurfacing? The answer to that question is the "problem". It was done to save political face and had zero to do with how that money could best have been spent.

My question still remains the same, Carbineer...what gave the Obama Administration the right to support public sector jobs while ignoring private sector jobs? The infrastructure projects were a joke. So were the tax credits. As for the "green" energy spending? Why does it seem to be that so much of that investment went to people who had supported Barack Obama financially rather than those that had a viable business plan?

And saying that the GOP plan differed only in it's percentage of tax cuts vs. spending is like saying that black is like white except for the difference in their coloring.

You just said the tax credits were a joke, so the GOP version of the stimulus would have been a bigger joke, by your own measure.
