I just read an article that mentioned the fact that Michael Jordan was once cut by his H.S. basketball coach, thus motivating him to try harder. The rest is history, of course.

I was once told by a supervisor with Dept of Defense that I had little chance of being promoted (despite superior performance in the job) because I didn't have a college degree. At the time I had a 2-year degree with honors, three years honorable service in the Army, and had been his best employee for the preceding two years. And yet he (who had no degree but was WWII generation) deemed my coworkers, who had degrees in English Lit and Spanish to be infinitely more qualified than me.

So that motivated me to go to night school, where I eventually got my degree, a law degree, and an MBA. Fuck him, right? (He was dead by that time).

Any of YOUR stories of setbacks that motivated you do try harder and achieve something?
