The Trump administration says Attorney General Jeff Sessions was acting as a then-U.S. senator when he talked to Russia’s ambassador at an event during last year’s Republican National Convention in Cleveland, but Sessions paid for convention travel expenses out of his own political funds and he spoke about Donald Trump’s campaign at the event, according to a person at the event and campaign-finance records.

Sessions made comments related to Trump’s presidential campaign at a Heritage Foundation event during the Republican convention in July, when he met with Russian Ambassador Sergei Kislyak, according to a person at the event in Cleveland.

He was just Senator Sessions at that event. And he spoke with many people including ambassadors. What's the problem with him using his own political funds?

I'm not getting this.

Me neither. Why did he decide to hide his Russian ties if they would be so harmless? Didn't he realize that anything Russian would be of interest under an administration currently being investigated for Russian collusion?

This Wall Street Journal story runs pretty deep.

He didn't hide the meetings. Not at all. The question that Franken asked strictly related to campaign matters.

Neither meeting with the Russian ambassador had anything to do with the campaign. Hence, Sessions told the truth.

And he is completely cleared by the Justice Department saying that the Senator was just doing his day jobs.

Deeper than the Justice Department clearing him from any wrong doing? It was a social event where Sessions talked to many people including other ambassadors.

Full title: Sessions discussed Trump campaign-related matters with Russian ambassador, U.S. intelligence intercepts show

Russia’s ambassador to Washington told his superiors in Moscow that he discussed campaign-related matters, including policy issues important to Moscow, with Jeff Sessions during the 2016 presidential race, contrary to public assertions by the embattled attorney general, according to current and former U.S. officials.

Ambassador Sergey Kislyak’s accounts of two conversations with Sessions — then a top foreign policy adviser to Republican candidate Donald Trump — were intercepted by U.S. spy agencies, which monitor the communications of senior Russian officials both in the United States and in Russia. Sessions initially failed to disclose his contacts with Kislyak and then said that the meetings were not about the Trump campaign.

One U.S. official said that Sessions — who testified that he has no recollection of the April encounter — has provided “misleading” statements that are “contradicted by other evidence.” A former official said that the intelligence indicates that Sessions and Kislyak had “substantive” discussions on matters including Trump’s positions on Russia-related issues and prospects for U.S.-Russia relations in a Trump administration.

Sessions has said repeatedly that he never discussed campaign-related issues with Russian officials and that it was only in his capacity as a U.S. Senator that he met with Kislyak.

I can't wait for Vlad to punish Dems for their "Russian Interference Whining" by giving Trump a Super, nay, a SuperDuper, Senate Majority in 2018

Sounds like Sessons will be a goner before long. Then, Trump can nominate a replacement who will fire Mueller. Can you imagine the confirmation hearings...

Apparently the US Intel Agency is trying to stage a coup against the Trump Administration

I wonder if the reality has started to sink in for Trump yet... that Putin who he thought was an ally is now allowing his government to start turning on Trump to make the U.S. government more divided than ever and to look like idiots on the world stage.
