Sergeant at eye of storm says he won't apologize

:clap2:

In this case I think the cop had a good reason to ask for ID. The house had been called in as a possible burglary in progress and Gates approximately fit the description of the suspects. That the cop then refused to show his own ID is inexcusable.

If the cop was in uniform and was wearing his rank and had a name plate presumably some part of his uniform also had his identification number, then ask yourself why Gates demanded the cop's id.
We don't know that he was or if he was willing to stand still long enough so that GAtes could note it. I imagine it was his intention to report the officer.
Cops here do not always wear a badge and name tag. I had to ask a cop for ID once. His badge was in his wallet.

Indeed, we don't know.

Where was he actually standing when he was behaving in a disorderly manner?
In his own house. For the most part. Reports are conflicting. But all seem to agree most of the incident occurred in his home.

The photo clearly shows the officers are wearing badges and name tags.

But nice try.

Why should he apologize? He asked the man to provide i.d. that it was in fact his house. The man refused and started accusations of racism. Of course the officer needs proof it is indeed his house. This case is so fucking stupid and what makes it worse is Obama even taking the time to comment on the case without knowing any of the facts. Way to run with your choke out Mr. President.

[Obama says police acted 'stupidly' in arrest

WASHINGTON – President Barack Obama said Wednesday that police acted "stupidly" in the arrest of prominent black scholar Henry Louis Gates Jr. and that despite racial progress blacks and Hispanics are still singled out unfairly for arrest.
"This still haunts us," Obama said.
Obama called Gates a friend, and said he doesn't know all the facts of the case. Nonetheless, Obama said, anyone would have been angry if treated the way Gates claims police in Cambridge, Mass., treated him. Gates, a Harvard University professor, claims he was arrested in his home after showing ID to police who responded to a report of a possible burglary.
"Cambridge police acted stupidly in arresting somebody when there was already proof he was in own home," Obama said during a prime-time news conference that otherwise focused on the health care debate.
Gates' arrest followed a report of a possible burglary. A woman apparently saw Gates force the front door and called police. Police came and demanded that Gates show identification. Gates was arrested shortly afterward for alleged disorderly conduct, a charge that was dropped Tuesday.
"What I think we know separate and apart from this incident is that there's a long history in this country of African-Americans and Latinos being stopped by law enforcement disproportionately," Obama said. "That's just a fact."
That disparity is a reminder that "race remains a factor in the society," Obama said.

I'm sorry but this incident is not national news in my opinion. And certainly did not warrant an apology from the black mayor, it was not enough to upset the black governor and not worth the black president commenting that the police acted stupidly for investigating a possible home burglary.

Gov. Deval Patrick, who is black, said he was troubled and upset over the incident. Cambridge Mayor Denise Simmons, who also is black, has said she spoke with Gates and apologized on behalf of the city, and a statement from the city called the July 16 incident "regrettable and unfortunate."

And here we go again with people like you only paying attention to what you WANT to hear. First off, as a WHITE woman, I would have thrown a hissy fit if someone challenged me in my own home. Would I have been arrested for yelling at the police officers? I think not. Once I provided my identification, would I have needed to be dragged kicking and screaming to the POLICE STATION thereafter? You're goddamned right.

White or black, the actions of the police officer were completely unnecessary. Maybe he was debuting for the next new cop show, like there aren't enough already.

Second, Obama did not OFFER anything on this incident at last night's press conference. He was ASKED about it by one of the reporters, and stated AT THE OUTSET that he did not have all the facts.

an officer of the law who's been "called out" by the President of the United States apoligizes instantly if he's guilty-- this sergeant has been in and on the force long enough to understand the chain of command and what kind of "stage" he's on at the moment-- obviously, the gent knows he was just doing his job and Professor Gates decided to go all Bobby Seale on him-- sounds like we need to let the good professor slather and spit a bit more and then he'll go back to being the "...world famous black scholar" that nobody knew about-- i'm sure he is ashamed for behaving like he did-- once a cop sees ID he'll leave u alone unless u cross the line with "loud and tumultuous" behavior or threats-- i'm thinking Gates did both-- luckily he was able to piss off to Martha's Vin. for a well deserved R&R after his exhausting trip to China-- it'll all blow over quickly and then we can go back to pretending everything is A-OK between the "races"-- Regards, probus

So the cop just let him walk back up on his porch after arresting him?

Yes, the man was handcuffed and escorted by police. The reason (if you'd read the reports) are obvious. One officer went inside to retrieve Gates' cane and they could not leave the premises until it was secure.
There were several officers there. No need to make Gates go back up on the porch. Since he uses a cane all the more reason not to make him go back up steps. There is much in the officer's report that is suspect.

I am shocked that people exist that are as stupid as you.

What difference does it make if Gates walked, crawled, flew or was beamed onto the porch by Scotty?

Carrying an ID on you is not required in this country, as you point out. It's a little disturbing that people think it is.

I challenge you to call your local police dept. and ask them if your required show proof that you are who you say you are when requested by an officer. I'll be back tomorrow to read your response.
Do your own research, bozo. Have a nice day.

That's what ai thought. You don't want to know the truth and perhaps learn something, you simply want to live in your delusional world. I hope it works for you.

so,, in conclusion,, white police officers are always wrong in the liberal playbook,, anarchy is in the Alinsky handbook and Ayeres is their hero! so to know a libral you gotta know your 3 A.'s

Acorn

Alinsky

Anarchy

There is still the huge unanswered question here: Why was this man arrested after the cops realized he was not breaking and entering? Just because he gave them some lip? Well shit, if that's the case, the Cambridge lockup must be packed full 24/7.

I thought you promised us you were going away?

I think you must just be a troll playing stupid for attention because no one could be as clueless as you. You don't arrest a guy on the street and then walk him back up to his front door. The photo shows that Gates was arrested inside or just outside his door.
You claim the photo shows the cops were wearinmg badges and name tags. I only see badges. And it's not even clear if Officer Crowley is in the photo.

see? you are just like what's his name.. there is a lot you don't know but are willing to say the cop was wrong,, and racist.. and stupid my my my

What a classic example of FOXNews distorting what someone says by its headline. Here is what Crowley SAID--bearing no resemblence to the words "butt out" --

Crowley told WEEI sports radio network that it was "disappointing that (Obama) waded into what should be a local issue that plays out here."

Crowley told the radio station that he supports the president "to a point, I guess."

I don't know who is racist or who isn't but the amazing thing is the belief that it is us, the citizens, who have to prove what it is we own, if it is our house, our car, etc. Some of you need a refresher in basic rights.

The burden is on the cop to have probable cause. The police do not have the right to make you prove anything. They have the burden of proof. How the fuck this got switched around in the minds of so many is beyond me. Are we now the new Soviet Union, like in the old spy movies, where there are men with guns around every corner who ask "let me see your papers"?

If I am putting a new roof on my house am I obligated to show any random cop my ID? Just so he can rest easy knowing I'm not roofing a strangers house?

This belief that cops have the right to demand identification at any given instance is absurd. This fucking country will have the police state it deserves. You fucking twits not only asked for it, you're already believing in it.

I was thinking alone those same lines, but in the context of all the screeching by the righties about the "right" to shoot and kill someone to protect their "property" (per the Constitution, so they say). What would have happened if Mr. Gates, being shocked and surprised, had pulled a gun and shot the cop? After all, someone had plundered into his home. Would he have been 'Constitutionally right" to shoot the perceived intruder?

Show me where I made a promise. then when you fail (which I'm sure your accustomed to) you can fuck off!!

As a matter of fact, I'm done conversing with a total idiot. I get more intelligent debates from my five year old grandson than left wing losers such as yourself.

I'll concede to the fact that you have no idea what your talking about and you are the one that's a troll and you've proven it by your asinine comments and questions. Case in point "How did he get on the porch?"

Next time they receive a call to the address for a burglary or what have you ... ignore it. Oh wait that's racist.

The cop was responding to a call of a burglary in progress ... the one person that did break in and answered the door was asked for id ... why not just say I live here sure and be thank ful the cops responded.

He did that. But apparently it wasn't enough. I think there's more to what went down than this cop is willing to admit. And what about the 911 call that it was "two black men with backpacks"??? If Crowley was looking for those two, would he have gently knocked on the door and said "Sir, do you live here?" Or would he have BANGED on the door, with gun drawn? My guess is the latter.

The officer doesn't need to apologize for being a racist.
He should be reprimanded for making a totally unnecessary arrest all because his widdle feewings were hurt by being called a racist.

That's just stupid. Gates was warned TWICE. He wouldn't let it go and he was arrested. It's HIS fault, he deserved it, but because he's a black Harvard professor, he gets away with it and will ruin the career of a good cop simply because he's white. Racism is indeed alive and well in the United States.

Yes, it is, and you just proved it. Why are you automatically taking the cop's side?

Whoa? What a thought! In my own case, I would never have let the cop in my front door till I saw some ID first and was sure he wasn't an impostor.
