Arctic Sea Ice News and Analysis | Sea ice data updated daily with one-day lag

They just released the ice extent in the arctic today, and it is the 2nd lowest in 1 million years.

The lowest being 2012 due to a very anomalous heat wave that pushed through the barents straight. If that heatwave happened today the reduction in ice this year would be much worse than it already is.

The reduction of ice removes weight from the sea floor and the ceiling above, preventing Methane release to the atmosphere.

As the ice recedes more methane is released, which has even more devastating consequences than CO2.

Call me when crocodiles and palm trees return to Alaska.

But great news since most weather related deaths are due to cold and this opens up millions of new acres to be farmed.

Hmmmm............... While I agree that the melting of the Arctic Sea Ice will have serious consequence, in fact, is having serious consequences, the weight on the bottom of the sea is the same whether the column has ice on top, or is water all the way up. The increasing temperature of the water, and the fact that the removal of the ice cap allows storm waves that the clathrates have not experianced in recent times is of far more consequence.

Actually not, look it up.

The ice cap does place pressure on the bottom of the ocean that is relieved when the ice cap is gone. The ice cap is a reservoir of water that otherwise would not be there but would flow away and disperse to other parts of the globe.

Now water is no longer fluid! DAMN YOU GLOBAL WARMING DENIERS!

It's spelled "IMMINENT" you silly twit. And according to your hero's the Arctic was supposed to be ice free three years ago. The level of hysteria that you clowns use to proclaim yet another "impending disaster" while funny, is not born out by fact. I can't even begin to remember the number of "tipping points" you fools have bleated about, but it is in the twenties now. Just imagine silly boy, over twenty "tipping points" have passed, and the world looks exactly the same. No disaster, no billions dead, like one of your hero's predicted, nada.

Face it silly boy, you are the modern day "boys who cried wolf", but unlike the story, there is NO WOLF.

So the Arctic is a sealed area isolated from the ocean?
Must be the new kind of physics they are dumbing down kids with these days.

Ever? Please post what the Arctic ice was on ....oh say 12 AD.

I eagerly await your information

Nature abhors a vacuum and always seeks to achieve balance. No worries; it will all work out.

If nothing else, all the Christians predicting the end of the world will finally be right!

You realize they can drill the ocean floor for core samples and determine sea ice extent by looking at the diatomes that sediment the seabed?

Why are holocaust deniers so fucking stupid?

15% ice levels are at 2 STD.... Normal
30% ice levels are at 0 STD.... Normal
Melt has stopped in the Arctic .... Normal

You alarmists are so full of crap.. And i though Matthew was full of shit.. You even beat him for this line of stupid.. And then we ignore the Antarctic..

Really? Here is a graph of the Vostok ice core data...it gives us a pretty good indication of what global temperatures have looked like for the past 420,000 years. Take a look.

Do you think that the present state of the Arctic ice is lower than the warm period of about 330,000 years ago...or how about 240,000 years ago...or 125,000 years ago...they all look to have been considerably warmer than the present...

And since the graph is sort of large...lets take a look at an enlargement of the past 50,000 years.

vostok-ice-core-50000%20med.jpg

It sure looks like there have been a lot of periods in the past 12,000 years or so that look to be warmer than the present...do you really think the arctic ice is lower now than during those previous periods that were warmer than the present?

Admittedly, the Antarctic is a long way from the Arctic, so just to be sure we are being fair, lets look at some ice core data from a location much closer to the arctic...this data is from Greenland and covers the past 10,000 years....
Screen_shot_2012-10-06_at_11.14.04_AM.png

Do you think the Arctic ice might have been lower than the present during any of the time presented in this graph?...It was collected above the Arctic Circle and shows us what the temperature of the region looked like...

Think maybe there was less ice...or maybe no ice at all about 7800 years ago....how about 6900 years ago...how about during the minoan warming period...was there any ice at all in the arctic during that time...compare the temperature then to the more modern temperature... how about during the Roman warm period...how about the Medieval warm period?

Your claim is that at present, the Arctic ice is at its second lowest point in a million years...Looking at the data from just the past 10,000 years, how much credibility do you believe the claim of the second lowest ice in a million years has? Be honest if you have it in you.
