Senator (Rockefeller): Let’s study violent video games—again

December 20, 2012 -- Don Reisinger

Sen. Jay Rockefeller (D-WV) has introduced legislation that calls for an investigation into violent video games and their impact on children in the wake of last week’s horrific Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting.

In a statement released yesterday, Rockefeller said that his legislation enlists the National Academy of Sciences to “investigate the impact of violent video games and other content on children’s well-being.” If the organization is given the green light, it will present its findings within 18 months to Congress, the FTC and the FCC. …

The impact of violent video games on youthful behaviors has been debated for years. However, the topic took center stage last week after Adam Lanza, a reportedly avid gamer, killed 20 innocent children, his mother, and school officials, in one of the worst school shootings in American history. Rockefeller said he will call on the Federal Trade Commission and the Federal Communications Commission to “expand their work in this area.” …

Violent video games are rated M for mature and thus are forbidden to be sold to minors. Realizing that FACT tells me that that senator is a fucking idiot.

Why the fuck isn't he investigating BAD PARENTS who give mature rated content to children?

i play violent video games, but i'm an adult.

and let's not kid ourselves - the violence in a game like Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II is not the same as the violence in Mortal Kombat on the Sega Genesis - which led to the forming of the ESRB.

as the medium evolves it might not be the worst thing in the world to study it a bit.

I can see it coming now.

If you want to buy the next COD you're gonna have to goto a shady street corner store where video games are stored BEHIND the porno section.

I suppose You could list many an influence that corrupt the morals, social judgement and causes a hardening of society. Personally, I'm not big on the government being given or taking that responsibility.

In other worlds, just face the fact that were stuck on this course until the pendulum of life swings back to a caring society, if ever.

Sooo in the mean time accept it, piss n moan or pray I suppose...:dunno:

i'm definitely not for that - but a porn and video game store doesn't sound like a bad idea...

i just think it might be worth taking a look at - seeing what impact realistic video game violence might have on a child's development.

This isn't the first time this has been mentioned, tippy Gore did way back when

the only uproar over it now is it came from the Nra..

I don't agree with it really, but video games does make it sort of glamorous and fun for kids to shoot and kill people..but if we get into this then we have to go after Hollywood and their movies..and we know they wouldn't even dare touch that one..they only want to come after the legal honest gun owners and video games

no one has been beaten to death with a video game cartrage from what Ive heard

there was this little bit of news about week ago that a gun in the hands of a nutter did kill a bunch of kids though

Do you know why all the referances to games and movies by name were decades old?

because these games and movies spur gun sales.

He didnt want to insult any new customers.

The NRA has become an organization that represents gun sellers and manufacturers.

THAT is why their only answer to everything involves them increasing guns sales in the nation.

when will the right stop being the pawn of monied interests?
