I don't believe he's dead.
The one thing nobody has touched on is the fact that hopefully, if he's brought to trial or killed, his massive fortune will be broken up, attached or at least de-stabilized. That's where his power comes from.
And I don't think he's uncomfortable hiding in the mountains. It's where he's spent most of his life, and he's done it voluntarily. He isn't another Saddam.
