URBANA, Ill. (AP) - U.S. Sen. Roland Burris says he wasn't trying to do any wheeling or dealing when he talked to then-Gov. Rod Blagojevich's brother about being appointed to the Senate.

Burris was at the University of Illinois for a series of tours and meetings Wednesday. After a tour at the National Center for Supercomputing Applications, Burris reiterated his denial that he'd been involved in any type of pay-to-play scheme regarding his Senate seat.

His comments came a day after the release of a transcript of a conversation with Robert Blagojevich in which Burris offers to "personally do something" for Rod Blagojevich's campaign fund. Burris on Wednesday said the transcript shows he's been truthful.

Burris says he didn't try to buy the Senate seat once held by President Barack Obama and never committed perjury. He's been scrutinized since his appointment by the now-ousted governor in December and for changing his story about whether he promised anything in exchange for it.

A federal judge in Chicago ruled that the U.S. Senate Ethics Committee can listen to a phone conversation between Burris and former Gov. Rod Blagojevich's brother. The FBI secretly recorded the conversation about three weeks before Blagojevich's arrest.

The ethics committee began a preliminary investigation into how Burris got his job, and the Sangamon County State's Attorney was asked to determine whether perjury charges were warranted.

Transcript of conversation between Blagojevich's brother and Burris.

Not quite junior. Page 20 is the kicker.

That reads like Burris was trying to find a backdoor way to curry favor with Blago to get the Senate appointment.

It is exacly what he was doing. Writing a check in someone else's name was Burris' idea. He was pimping hmself for that seat. Besides, this wasn't all of the conversation. It was simply what the US Attorney released. More will come out.

Seriously though. What should we expect from a guy that has has already designed his masoleum and built it.

Burris is a lying POS. No problem.

I disagree. As long as the dems are in power Burris gets a free ride, just like the voter intimidation done by the Black Panthers.. that's my prediction.

how is it you find page 20 as the "kicker"

the acknowledgment that payola would get them both in deep kimchi was articulated on page 18 ... it was burris' interjection of "plausible deniability" into the conversation which exculpates him

anybody here think lobbyists are forking over large sums of money to political campaigns for anything other than self interest. if this goes to trial that will make EVERY politician out there similarly vulnerable ... and they know it

Yes, Burris should resign. And this would be an excellant oppertunity for the Republicans to put up someone with credentials, and an ideology that is in tune with what a majority of American Citizens are worried about. But, as ussual, the Repubs will put up a Rushbaugh clone, and wonder why the crooked machine beat them. Better to have a smart crook than an incompetant ideologue. And so many of the incompetant ideologues have proven to be just as crooked as the machine politicians.

Well, I think he should be kicked out of the Senate and out of the Party. However, considering the people that remained in good graces in the Republican Party, like Delay and Gramm, I suppose that would be considered just normal politics to retain the 60 vote Senate.

Then you've got "normal politics" that got Sen. Stevens railroaded out of town, and a bunch of idiots with egg on their faces.

It would be interesting to turn Congress upside down and shake it to see what kind of shit falls out... It used to be, years ago, that congressional representatives went to Washington to serve the people. Now they go just to serve themselves. The sad thing is that we the voters keep electing people who shouldn't be there. Take Nancy Pelosi, for example. Can anybody in their right mind honestly say that she is a good representative for the State of California - the nation aside from it. She's just an example. There are many many more on both sides of the isle that really have no business being where they are. Nobody to blame except ourselves. Burris? He's just one more of the political criminals Illinois is known for. We're a sad case here in America. The rest of the world laughs at our stupidity.
