First, I think that Trump's lawyers or Senate GOP lawyers will ask the SCOTUS for a restraining order on the trial until the question is settled at the Supreme Court level. Which delays Biden's programs for his first 100 days, and that ain't good for the dems. And it kinda fires up the opposition more than they already are => total obstruction.

Second, I very much doubt there will be enough GOP senators to crossover and vote to convict; those that do so are more than likely to lose their next primary election. So, this is actually nothing more than a political exercise for the Dems to play to their base. Third, IMHO the democrats are actually doing the GOP a big favor if they can legally prevent Trump from running for president again. Trump is even talking about creating a Patriot Party, that would guarantee a democrat victory in 2024 by splitting the conservative vote.
