Two months after scientists reported that they had clocked subatomic particles known as neutrinos going faster than the speed of light, to the astonishment and vocal disbelief of most of the world’s physicists, the same group of scientists, known as Opera, said on Friday that it had performed a second experiment that confirmed its first results and eliminated one possible explanation for how the experiment could have gone wrong.

But the group admitted that many questions remain. “This is not the end of the story,” said Antonio Ereditato of the University of Bern in Switzerland, the spokesman for the collaboration, explaining that physicists would not accept the result that neutrinos could go faster than light until other experiments had come up with the same conclusion. “We are convinced, but that is not enough in science,” he said.

They then used the EPA to ban DDT. This DDT ban killed over 60 million people. Liberal propaganda has killed more people than all wars ever fought.

Exploration costs currently run under $3 per barrel in much of the Mideast, and below $7 for oil hidden deep under the ocean. But these costs have been falling, not rising, because imaging technology that lets geologists peer through miles of water and rock improves faster than supplies recede. Many lower-grade deposits require no new looking at all.

To pick just one example among many, finding costs are essentially zero for the 3.5 trillion barrels of oil that soak the clay in the Orinoco basin in Venezuela, and the Athabasca tar sands in Alberta, Canada. Believe it or not, I agree with you.

Global warming IS real, the political gain garnered from its abuse however is disgusting and a misuse of science. Which is a crime against humanity at the LEAST.

Except DDT has been physically proven to cause all the problems they say they cause, I will not debate with you the harm DDT causes to both humans and environmentally, as that is proven beyond doubt.

The key there however, is only in excessive amounts. In small amounts DDT is very useful.

It will continue to cost more as the effects of increasingly severe weather drive up the price of construction and insurance. An international team of scientists in Italy studying the same neutrino particles colleagues say appear to have travelled faster than light rejected the startling finding this weekend, saying their tests had shown it must be wrong. The September announcement of the finding, backed up last week after new studies, caused a furore in the scientific world as it seemed to suggest Albert Einstein’s ideas on relativity, and much of modern physics, were based on a mistaken premise. The first team, members of the OPERA experiment at the Gran Sasso laboratory south of Rome, said they recorded neutrinos beamed to them from the CERN research centre in Switzerland as arriving 60 nanoseconds before light would have done.

But ICARUS, another experiment at Gran Sasso — which is deep under mountains and run by Italy’s National Institute of National Physics — now argues that their measurements of the neutrinos energy on arrival contradict that reading. In a paper posted on Saturday on the same website as the OPERA results, [1110.3763v2] A search for the analogue to Cherenkov radiation by high energy neutrinos at superluminal speeds in ICARUS, the ICARUS team says their findings “refute a superluminal (faster than light) interpretation of the OPERA result.” They argue, on the basis of recently published studies by two top U.S. physicists, that the neutrinos pumped down from CERN, near Geneva, should have lost most of their energy if they had travelled at even a tiny fraction faster than light.

But in fact, the ICARUS scientists say, the neutrino beam as tested in their equipment registered an energy spectrum fully corresponding with what it should be for particles travelling at the speed of light and no more. Physicist Tomasso Dorigo, who works at CERN, the European Organisation for Nuclear Research, and the U.S. Fermilab near Chicago, said in a post on the website Scientific Blogging that the ICARUS paper was “very simple and definitive.” It says, he wrote, “that the difference between the speed of neutrinos and the speed of light cannot be as large as that seen by OPERA, and is certainly smaller than that by three orders of magnitude, and compatible with zero.” Under Einstein’s 1905 theory of special relativity, nothing can travel faster than light. That idea lies at the heart of all current science of the cosmos and of how the vast variety of particles that make it up behave.

There was widespread scepticism when the OPERA findings were first revealed, and even the leaders of the experiment insisted that they were not announcing a discovery but simply recording measurements they had made and carefully checked. However, last Friday they said a new experiment with shorter neutrino beams from CERN and much larger gaps between them had produced the same result. Independent scientists said however this was not conclusive. Other experiments are being prepared — at Fermilab and at the KEK laboratory in Japan — to try to replicate OPERA’s findings. Only confirmation from one of these would open the way for a full scientific discovery to be declared.

There is far too much information in the universe, and we are probably not capable of knowing it all. If we survive without destroying ourselves or are destroyed by an asteroid, we do have billions of more years to try and figure it out though.

It doesn't really seem that strange. The speed of neutrinos at different energies needs to be measured. Doesn't it seem that the speed of light depends on the energy of the moving particle? It requirred a huge amount of energy to go a tiny bit faster than light. With enough data, the correct explaination will fall out. This is all my speculation.

When I studied the Special Theory of Relativity in School, I was led to believe that for a particle to travel faster than the speed of light, it would have to have an imaginary number for its mass.
